ParticipantHi all! I have an old Britannia Si-9tb-ss range cooker we got 2nd hand around 2 years ago. At first it worked fine but the larger of the 2 ovens started not to heat up correctly which I guessed was an element issue but the rest still worked fine. Recently that oven has stopped working completely, eg no heat to the elements, grill and the light stopped working at the back. I done some googling and removed the elements to test with my multi meter to find the bottom element was faulty and so also was the thermostat. I have replaced these today but oven is no different.
When I turn the oven on there is an audible fan noise coming from the above the oven (not the internal fan at the back) and you can feel the air blowing but other than that nothing else works. The elements do not heat up either on grill or any oven settings, the fan at the back does not power up and the light doesn’t work inside the oven. The oven temp light which usually lights up until the oven reaches temperature does not come on at all but you can hear an audible click coming from it. Also the analogue clock has stopped working/ticking. It is like the oven is getting no power except the small fan noise I mentioned earlier and the smaller oven still works perfectly. I’m at a loss now as I can’t find anything else which could be causing the issue. I have just tested the oven thermal cut out for continuity and it seems fine. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Ross.

ParticipantThanks for the reply, I couldn’t see if the switch was burnt or not and didn’t want to take it apart from fear of losing track of connections. After looking up the switch you mentioned it seems like a common fault so just ordered a new main oven switch as wasn’t too expensive and received it today but after fitting its the exact same. Nothing in the oven working apart from the blower just above the oven which fires up when either oven is on. So confused now as can’t think of anything else. Thanks once again for taking the time to reply but is their any other ideas before I give up on this…

ParticipantAlso just noticed that when I switch between oven settings the amber temp light flickers on for a sec but only when the thermostat is off. I then tried it with the thermostat set to a temperature but get nothing at all… don’t know if this helps any diagnosis.

KeymasterControlling that, with the fan working, is the thermostat and switch and that’s really all there is. Anything else would make the oven dead completely I’d think.

Participantrdickson93 did you resolve the issue in the end, as the symptoms are very similar to our Britannia Oven at the moment?

ParticipantHi there.
Sorry I didn’t update this as was a few month after the post I managed to get it sorted. Turns out it was a wiring issue at the back of the oven where it is connected to the mains… ( the oven was fitted by an electrician which is why I didn’t question it at the time ). Obviously there is 3 cables which go into the back of the oven but the power must be split by metal contacts to power both, hence why only 1 of our ovens worked properly. Check the back of your oven and make sure it is wired Exactly like the diagram and that the metal/copper contacts which if memory serves me correctly are a kind of M shape are in the correct place and making good contact. I know it sounds like it wouldn’t be an issue like that but after doing this ours has worked no problem ever since. Thanks

ParticipantThanks rdickson93 for the update. I replaced my main oven selector/switch yesterday evening as that had been a bit stiff at the time of the oven going down. There were some blackened connectors so it was likely something was burnt out, and this has got the oven going again, so thanks to kwatt too!
