I wonder how many Service Engineers BG have nationwide ? Anyone Have any real idea of the numbers ?
For those if us that run our own business with retail frontends and a staff of engineers we have already learnt the finer mechanics of accounting, Profit & Loss and Stock controls and in additition the day to day running and fine tuning that goes into running a sucessful business. I used to work for a manufacturer service and we had 280 engineers across the country supported by a 1 million Pound service centre with a army of people who were supposed to accept calls from their customers and then allocate them geographically to the service force.
This worked for about two years and due to company service pledges i.e 48 hour service visits later reduced to 24 Hour visits and the incompetence of Service Centre Staff and Overworked engineers who were travelling miles and making stupid mistakes the system went into meltdown the outcome of it being to get rid of the overheads directly. i.e the engineers and franchise the work out.
Problem 1. Many of the Franchised companies were not versed in the ways of the company and its products.
Problem 2. Spares availablity became an issue.
Problem 3. Due to dropped calls, non availibilty of Spares, Lack of Technical Knowledge work was being recycled for which the franchises did not get paid for.
Problem 4. Volitile and Angry Customers !The bottom line is if it takes around 30’000 to keep a engineer in the field doing the sums at a rough guess of say 300 engineers gives a direct overhead of of the best part of 9 Million Pounds Per annum.
BG may well be able to ride this for a time but eventually their market will flatten out due to customers failing to be retained, natural wastage. Which equates to LOSS OF INCOME, As we know there have been a few examples of companies like BG going down the pan for similar reasons and I would say that for the engineers currently working for BG and those thinking about jumping onboard remeber the old saying of Make Hay While The Sun Shines ! It will not last long !
There will always be work for us guys we are after all skilled and we should not be shy about blowing our own trumpets. Both these companies as well as the wider public need us.
Go forth and Multiply I Say

Play between three and five times a week, for the past 28 years, I suspect that Martin has played more than the odd game as well. 🙂

May I respectfully suggest we put this topic back on stream, and remind ourselves of the state of British Gas, and their performance.

You are correct Alex and I apologise, however I have already aired my views on British Gas domestic appliance service, or complete lack of service

More British Gas incompetence. 😈
Went to a customer last week, machine was BER. I offered to disconnect the old machine so that it would be ready to uplift. On removing the cold hose I found that the tap was faulty, even though the blue plastic bit was missing, when I turned it off with pliers it was still coming out at full bore.
I advised her to get a plumber to attend to the tap before she got her new machine and had to leave the old one connected. She said “fine, I have a British Gas plumbing maintenance contract, I will give them a ring.” :rolls:
She rings me today to say that the BG bod that called was quite rude, kept telling her that she did not need a tap on the washer fill hose, it can always be turned off at the mains. He kept telling her this several times as if she was stupid then left without replacing the cold tap.
It is an easily accessible tap with a compression fitting. It would have taken him all of five minutes to change the damned thing. 😥I am going tomorrow to install her new machine ( no ISE she wanted a W/D 😥 ) . I will then hight-light the instructions recommending that you turn off the taps when not in use. ( I know hardly any one does 😉 ) then advise her to contact BG and insist they do their job correctly.

it would probaly have been dyno-rod who called, who are ofcourse now owned by centrica….these guys get £40 a call,,, so this would have been a nice little earner for them….
there seems to be a stick it to the man attitude at brit-gas
screw them for what they can get b4 the bubble bursts..end result bulls–t the customer in-out 5mins £40 quid richer and hey no-one bats an eyelid…this also goes down as a complete productivity levels high and everything is rosey int he garden…
this practice is rife al over B/G
yours.. been there…Disillusioned & left…
