Yet again ive just come from a customers house only having to tell them there washing machine is scrap. The reason for this is the drum shaft on there baumatic machine had rotted and snapped . The first thing i ask when i saw the state of the shaft is( do you use calgon). The answer was yes i do. I have been to quite a few of these calls now and think there must be somthing in calgon to rot aluminium. Anyone else had this problem?

Sure, but it always is a case not of Calgon that does the damage, but soap residue.
Worst affected are those makes that have deep crossover mouldings that allow soap to attach and begin ‘rusting’ the alloy. Often seen as jelly-like substances and powdery white crystals forming alongside.
Cause?….Incorrect application of powder and/or incorrect programme selection.

Very common in this soft water area. Whenever I go to a machine and see the Economy or Time Save button selected I know that in most cases the drum supports on the Hotpoint 9500/WM series machines will be rotting away. I always advise the correct use of temperature and detergent dosage, and thanks to the UKWG detergent training I am now in a better position to back up my advice.

We used to be Philco agents, and sold hundreds of the washer. Unfortunatly the legs on the spider, had big recess’s for excess soap to gather (like Martin mentioned 😉 ).
After our first few broken drums, we wrote to all our customers, warning about oversoaping. Not many listened.
Soap powder eating through 4-inch Alnuminum struts in 3-5years?!?!?! This stuff is in your clothes!!!! Next to your skin!!!!! It’s a good job humans are built better than white goods.

Just done one on a WM this afternoon, only 2 years old, using massive amounts of Bold liquid, with the Variable temp button turned down to 20° 😥

Think this is also down to the really poor quality of the alloy used.Just look at the old Hotpoint 1800 series same spider as 95 and wm but when did you ever see them rotted out.
Same applies to Hoover, old spiders and backplates never rotted,but ecologic range grow holes within years.Re: broken drum shafts

Same applies to Hoover, old spiders and backplates never rotted,but ecologic range grow holes within years.I think it has as much to do with the modern detergents and the over emphasis on economy or cool washing. Your Gran used to boil everything 🙂 . How many times do you go to a machine and find the eco button selected, where the customer leaves it like that all the time. I have seen many Hotpoint 1800’s with rotted backplates, but there is far more alloy in these machines for the detergent to attack, so it will take a little longer. Watch the energy adverts on the TV with that wally in the Indian outfit that has shrunk advising everyone to turn the 60° wash down to 40° 😥 Still we are in the business of repairing them so, swings & roundabouts.

Had one today. This was a six year old hotpoint that I replaced a door seal and brushes on only last week. When I was there last week I instructed to do a boil wash to try and freshen the machine up as it stunk like an old cess-pitt.
Turns out that the mould was the only thing holding it together!!! Of course it was my fault! 😉
Should have kept quiet, had it broken in a few months time I could have charged another labour charge.

I had one today, the customer that asked me to look at the waste disposal after I had repaired the washer a couple of weeks ago, noticed the new box of Ariel in the corner 😉 . It didn’t stop me charging her the full price for the job. I haven’t got X Ray vision and I did tell her that oversoaping and warm washes would damage the drum support when I fitted the door seal the week before.
