ParticipantHi there.
A few days ago my Mrs rang me to say our fridge was hot inside, the food had defrosted from the freezer.
When I got home the fridge was indeed quite warm inside.
I whipped the back of the fridge to find the fan had stopped spinning and a great deal of heat coming from it.
I’m not a fridge technician, I fix computers for a living. I ordered another fan/motor and it came and I fitted it this morning.
Here are some pics. If this doesnt work (as I’m now waiting for the fridge to recool after being off for a few days) do you have any suggestions. Its quite a large family fridge and if I’m honest we cant really afford a new one, and didnt have home insurance at teh point it broke. Silly I know but thats the situation I’m in. I’d MUCH rather fix this than spend ona new one. Spend so far has been £28 on the new fan.
There are links under each pic for the FULL picture.

Red Circle is the fan I’ve replaced as the other one wasnt working.

If this doesnt work, anyone got any speculations/suggestions going on these pics/info so far? I have tools/multimeter.THANK YOU!! 🙁

Is there any hint the freezer compartment is getting cold at all?
No it gets warmer the longer the unit is on.Is the compressor actually running? It is the black metal box next to the fan you replaced. Not sure. When I switch on the fridge after being off for a few mins, it’ll hum for around 20 seconds then I hear a click and it seems to be silent. What does that do?
Most compressors get very hot when operating, and buzz too. Well mine certainly gets hot.
I presume it is a frost free fridge freezer from Indesit? Yes it is.
If yes, there should be a fan inside the freezer compartment? Is it turning at all? Yes the freezer compartment fan is turning fine.
The photo u have uploaded for a thermostat, looks more likely to be a defrost timer. OK my mistake.
Hope this helps diagnosis.

Well, cheers for the massively overwhelming response. It truly touches my heart. I’m so glad I found this forum, I liken it to dropping something down the side of the sofa and then trying to fish it out and coming accross a tenner I dropped down there a few weeks ago without noticing. Nothing give me greater joy.
Sometimes, when I’m at home, I cry a little knowing that there are so many people in the world so underprivalidged not to have had the same support and experience with internet forums as I’ve had, I’ve even heard that some people fall at the first hurdle and cant even afford to have a computer.
Thats why, with the joint help of some of my friends, I have decided to set up a charity in aid of those unable to recieve the same ammount of effort and support I so gladly received from this forum. If you wish to donate to this newly set up charity then please dont hesitate to send in your cheques/cash/possessions and will do my best to make sure someone in need receives the funds you so kindly donated.
Regards

Hi Jonnie,
Probably nobody that knows has read it, ever think of that? 😉
Basically, either the defrost timer is stuck on defrost, which is unlikely given what you’ve posted.
More probable the compressor is shot, I’d be about 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure that was the fault, the cutting out after a few seconds is an almost certain sign that it’s toast and needs replaced which isn’t a DIY job and, it’s expensive.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have taken on board your suggestions. Thanks for them. In my vast wealth of knowledge I have unfortunately already figured out this due to my massive IQ. Once I was approached by mensar but unfortunately the guy that came to see me couldn’t pronounce my name properly and I instantly judged him to be quite thick and ergo underneath me so I gave him a cup of hot sweet tea and few custard creams then sent him on his way. He was also late much like replies to my thread which I have to be honest doesn’t bode well for a man representing an organisation devoted to all things clever. Plus sat navs aren’t that dear these days so he really should have got here on time.
I have decided to buy another fridge freezer as I have saved up more than enough money already. It’s quite a nice one actually. Its bright yellow and can hold all my beer. Which is nice. My dog also likes it in there. In fact…. Hang on…. I haven’t seen him in a while I hope he’s not still in there…. I’ll be right back….

Now why would anyone ‘presume’ to know the make and model of your appliance, had it been included in the header or in your first post it may have attracted more attention but as it is the weekend I guess the Indesit fridge experts were having a well earned break.
PS. The guy from MENSA may be thick but I’ll bet he knows how to write it correctly.
