ParticipantWell, I have finally registered!! Anyways, odd I know, but I am looking for a washing machine that is broken, but can still spin. Why? Well:
I am working on a children’s science show called “Prove It” for CITV, which is a science based show for 6-12 year olds. I would like to do a quick “item” on a dancing washing machine to prove that weight dampens vibration.
I am looking for a machine that can spin; so the drum bearings, suspension, timer & motor have to be OK; and the machine must still look reasonably presentable on the outside. I would be taking the concrete weights out, and basically watch the machine move across the studio.
I suspect it would be best getting a machine without the balancing mechanism inside. I was possibly thinking of an old Hotpoint WM model. What do you guys think? Would that be a suitable model?
If anyone has a suitable machine in the Kent area, do post a reply on this forum! Cost must be as close to zero as possible; as Childrens programming does not have the budget of adults!
Cheers!
Rob (Zanussi FJ1296 still working well!)

KeymasterI can’t say for sure Rob, but I’m sure that one of the guys may be able to help you out here. They may even be able to help you make it dance, safely. 😉

I hope so! 😀
The great thing is with washing machines is that children can relate to them as they see them everyday. I alsways used to find it interestign that for such a complicated appliance, the only thing holding it to the floor was a lump or two of concrete.
So any suggestions lads??! 🙂

A visit to your local council tip will make you spoilt for choice at the assortment. With many makes that have a top concrete counterweight, simply remove that then fill a hot water bottle, place it in the drum then…
….stand well back (and at this point you will need to have fire crews and ambulance in attendance) before finally hitting the spin switch at the end of a long pole…!

I would try our local tip, but they won’t let us take any machines away (insurance / liability)- damn!! I also don;t know why the machine is in there. A machine that doesn’t spin is no use to me either!!!
Any particular models to stay away from? I was thinking of ones with the electronic balance.September 20, 2005 at 12:21 pm #147779tonyclifton

nobody has looked at the obvious you do not need the macine electronics only a power dimmer powering the motor direct you can vary the speed and control it off camera with ease
