Built-in ‘fridge/freezer : function of the sealing strip ?

I am in the process of installing my first-ever built-in appliance, an AEG SCT71900S0 ‘fridge-freezer, and I have to say, it is proving far more difficult than I anticipated, given that the cabinet already housed an earlier ‘fridge-freezer, and all I have had to do is to relocate the upper shelf 75mm higher in order to accommodate the extra height of the AEG. Leaving aside fact that I cannot currently achieve the necessary clearance left, right and in front (just a few mm in each case, but enough to prevent me from fitting the outer doors at the moment), I am puzzled by the function of the sealing strip. The AEG manual (http://tinyurl.com/AEG-SCT71900S0) shews the sealing strip stuck to the LHS of the appliance, and this is indeed where a similar strip was attached to the earlier ‘fridge-freezer, but what function does it serve ? Is it, in fact, an aid to achieving the requisite 4mm clearance for the outer edge of the doors, is it simply cosmetic, or does it have some other function that I have not been able to fathom ?

You can leave it out if its causing you grief! Normally its to close off the open void which is viewable when the door is open, its more needed on the unhinged side than on the hinged side, it may have a function in keeping all airtight.

It simply seals the gap between the carcass and the appliance.

OK, thanks chaps : it doesn’t sound as if it is crucial in any way (neither my wife nor I care about being able to see a 4mm gap between appliance and carcase when the doors are open). I’ll not worry about it for now, and I seem to have created the necessary 44mm clearance at the front, so the next objective is to get the LHS as close to 4mm as possible from the carcase and then see if the concealed hinges still foul the internal doors. I am inclined remove the whole appliance again and set the doors as far to the right as I can in order to maximise the probability of the hinges clearing the inner doors (it is unfortunately impossible to adjust the concealed hinges with the appliance in situ).
