Bush HW60 tripping rcd.

Not a technician, so will describe as best as I can what I have tried so far and symptoms. Washing machine was mid cycle and tripped the mains, I flicked the trip switch back on and tried to turn the machine back on, but immediately tripped again. I disconnected things individually to try to find the source of the shorting, I disconnected the heater, direct wired to do away with mains interference filter, eliminated water inlet valves etc etc. The only way the machine will turn on is with the motor disconnected, which I thought was the problem, but I bought a second hand one and put new brushes in before fitting it for peace of mind. I put the motor in expecting it to be fixed, but no, exactly the same, immediately tripped. I am not sure what else to try, surely both motors can’t be faulty? Disconnected motor again and I can switch on, select wash type etc. but that’s as far as I can get (which should also eliminate chaffed wires). With my very limited washing machine knowledge everything points to the motor, but I have changed it and got no further forward, is this a problem with the pcb causing the trip when the power goes to the motor, don’t know what else to try? Thanks in advance for any help or advice that anyone can give.

Try taking the wires off the brushes , leave motor plugged in and see if it trips. You will have to make sure the wires can not touch anything

And yes both motors could be faulty. In the fault finding world you cannot say for certain any part is not faulty including new ones.

Post update, disconnected wires to brushes, but still the same, trips electrics! 🙁

Some more information to add, may or may not make a difference on diagnosis. When the motor is connected, the machine trips the rcd as soon as it is switched on at the wall switch, it does not even let me switch on with the power button on the machine. With the motor disconnected I can switch the wall switch on without it tripping, then power the machine up with the washing machine power button, can also go through the different wash choices with the jog wheel. As soon as the motor is re-connected it is back to tripping the rcd as soon as the wall switch is turned on, don’t get as far as turning the machine on with the machine power button! Also tried it on a completely different socket to eliminate the wall socket and the wall power switch.

You would need to test the motor for earth faults

You can try a multimeter first but it may need a megger type tester to be certain

Thanks for the replies Dave. Unfortunately my other half got too impatient not having a washing machine and ordered a new one. I didn’t have any means (or knowledge) on testing the motor for faults, so it will be on the scrapheap soon. Annoyed that I could not fix it, probably something so simple and inexpensive to fix it, but I ran out of things to try. 🙁
