ParticipantWe are looking to buy a Retro Fridge Freezer and have our hearts set on a SMEG. We have read bad reports on this. Has anyone had a good experience? Our alternatives are either a Nardi or Gorenje but we do prefer the looks of the SMEG

Hi Richard
Trouble is that sector of the market is so small that there just isn`t the choice of product out there I`m afraid. We stock the Gorenje`s and to date the only problems we have had has been internal cosmetic parts replacements required. That said some of the machines are Smeg sourced so there shouldn`t be a great deal of difference.
Where Smeg do score is the greater choice of colour and designs. At the end of the day it`s the look which sells these, It then becomes a centre piece and talking point in the kitchen as opposed to a good old bog standard fridge freezer sat purring away doing what it does best.
Gorenje does score higher with their 5 year parts and labour warranty and local sourced service. You pays your money……………Don

The Smeg cabinet is made by Gorenje Don, then Smeg put a fancy door on it and paint it.
Basically it’s a Gorenje, just much more expensive.
The FAB28 range has suffered a few problems. 😉
IMO the door that Smeg have used is too heavy and this distorts the cabinet leading to poor door closing, then condensation and/or over-freezing in the icebox. They have to be installed 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} dead level and, if memory serves there’s at least one bulletin to that effect.
They’ve been trying to sort the problems for years with that fridge and I’ve spoken to more than a few customers that reckon it was an £800 mistake for the sake of the look. :rolls:
You can get much better for a lot less so long as you don’t want the retro look.

Thanks for that. Does anyone know anything about Nardi?

KeymasterI don’t know enough about them to comment other than to say that they are generally regarded as a “budget” choice.

I think I’m getting there. Not the SMEG FAB32 as it’s an expensive risk. Seen the Gorenje today and not convinced. The Nardi seems to fit the bill and it’s reasonably priced so maybe worth a try even without seeing one. I can’t make myself buy a standard modern style “box”. However the Hoover VCN6185 has caught my eye. Any good? Great website by the way!

depends how mcuh you hace seen it for. some retailers will inflate the price and sell it as an “almost” smeg at an “almost” smeg price.
shop around and price a few indies against each other and you should get a resonable price for one if you want black silver or stndard colours. you can always peel the gorenje logo off too if you want to be ubersnobbish 😛
