ParticipantI’ve been offered a Siemens washer dryer (legit!) that’s been kept in storage by a retailer for 2 years in its packaging. I can tell by the FD no, (9207) thanks to this site, that it was made in July 2012. I believe they have a year’s warranty so it has passed it, but it is a current model still being sold in Currys, John Lewis etc.
My question is about whether washer dryers in particular deteriorate even if they are unpacked and unused? It may sound stupid but I was once told by a second hand car salesman that an old car with 25,000 miles on the clock isn’t the same as a much newer one of the same model with the same mileage, because rubber parts etc deteriorate with age, particularly if they’re in storage, not being used.
Not being an expert on white goods but realising there might be a lot of rubber seals, washers, tubes etc, I just wondered if the same applies to a washer dryer?Secondly, I know nowadays they have a lot of electronics, and wondered if the latest model will have the latest version of the software whereas one 2 years old might not have the up to date version? And as far as I know you can’t upgrade the software on a washing machine like you can on say a phone.
So, can any of you experts out there tell me are either of these things true, and do they matter or is it OK to buy a ‘new’ machine that’s passed its guarantee period?
Many thanks for any replies because I think my current one’s days are numbered and any of the new Bosch/Siemens/Neff (which I’ve found out are the same) are soooo expensive!!

It should be just fine in ever respect assuming stored all that time under ideal storage conditions. (Temperate and dry).
Software, rubber seals and so on, every bit the same as those on sale new today.
I assume a big savings on the cost of a new machine is your incentive to purchase?

Thanks Martin,
Yes – about half price!!
wants to get rid so think I’ll go for it – don’t know about storage conditions but assume a retailer wouldn’t store something he thought he’d sell in the wrong way… Might just check the box looks OK before handing over the cash tho, so many thanksMay 4, 2014 at 9:22 pm #413271Martin

Any signs of mildew is not good otherwise a bargain in the making. 😀

Also, your guarantee will start from your date of purchase not from when the appliance was manufactured.
