    I have a Lec freezer Model U5546W, SN 90900087444447336.
This has a plastic handle which is unfit for purpose because it gradually cracks and breaks. Lec replacement hndles are easy to obtain but they each only last about a year. I want to replace the handle with a metal one but Lec do not make metal replacements. ‘Universal’ replacement handles are available but only in plastic. There are some metal replacement handles for other brands of fridge or freezer that look as if they might fit, e.g. the Scandinova Refrigerator Door Handle for FF7054D (see http://www.espares.co.uk/part/fridges-a … oor-h.html). But it seems to be impossible to obtain the key information I need to be sure – i.e. what the distance between the screw holes is (my handle has a distance of 16.5 cm). Can anyone help – either with the screwhole distance for the Scandinova, or with any other make of metal handle? Many thanks.

No, they likely won’t fit and most manufacturers don’t do any spares from alternative materials other than the odd washing machine door seal that you can get to be “grease resistant”.

The only universal door handle I’ve seen is this one but that won’t do for a chest freezer.

In all honesty, we will mostly get a generic drawing (if we’re lucky) and a part number with a brief description like 123456789 – Door Handle and, that’s about all the information we will ever get for 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}+ of all spare parts. You can read more and see an example of the information owe get in this article.

And, no spares supplier will order stuff in randomly on the off chance that when they measure it up that it may do as most all spares are non-returnable once ordered.

eSpares probably won’t have that in stock, it’ll be sent direct from the manufacturer as they hold very little stock themselves, it’s almost all dropshipped so, they won’t be able to tell you even if they wanted to. And, Distripart who distribute the parts in the UK won’t want to know as, to them, it’s just a part number and won’t give a jot about providing extended information.

many thanks for replying so quickly. That explains why spare parts suppliers can’t help with the info I need!

My freezer is an upright not a chest, by the way. The universal handle you provided the link to is one of the ones I found on the internet but it’s not quite big enough (max screw distance 15 cm). Other bigger universal handles i’ve found have all been plastic.

I would suspect that they are plastic for a reason. 😉

I used to have to explain it all the time with old Candy door guides when people asked, when they broke all the time :why can’t we get a metal one, then it won’t break?”. The reason is very simple, the guides broke because (in the main) people were too rough with them and slammed the door closed and they went into a plastic locator which was next to the door lock. If the guide was made of metal then the fault would be the door locator and door lock being broken and not the guide, which was usually an engineer visit and about £20 or so in parts.

The door pecker guide cost about £3 and anyone with a star screwdriver could change it in two minutes.

The pecker guide breaking was a much better option, if irritating.

In this case, if you used a metal door handle it’d probably rip the door as it’s probably made from the usual glorified tin. A handle costing a few quid is a much better option than a door that’s probably about £100.

I hope that might explain the thinking, sometimes. Other time the manufacturers are just as daft as brushes and cut costs by using cheap materials to hit retail price points.
