ParticipantHi, does anyone know if it’s possible to run a typical Bosch washing machine motor outside the module simply with a mains flex to a 13amp plug adapted to a Bosch motor plug? The reason I ask is because I have re-brushed so many of these motors on calls and found them to ark and spark like crazy to the point where I have to advise my customers to spin the machine without load a minimum of 10 times before the brushes bed in and settle down. Once there bedded in they are fine but I have had the odd one where it has taken the module out with it. I try to bed them in while im on site but it adds about 30 mins to the job messing about, so just thought a 10 min blast at full RPM might speed things up a little.. I remember doing something similar with the old Hoover logic/softwave motors but can’t remember how I did it…
Thanks,

Most brush motors can be run from mains ok. We do them a lot when customers bring in motors for brushes or testing. the main trouble is, is that they all have different ways of wiring. using a meter you need to find the the pairs of tags relating to armature and field. use a link wire to short one field and one arm and then apply mains to the other two. Do not connect the tacho, or on some motors the TOC. We use a dimmer switch inline so we can adjust the speed, this helps as you can start at a very slow speed and build up. use a three core lead so you can still earth the motor. As for the bosch motors, they are a pain. some makes of brushes seem to be better than others, but we stiil write a few off if the green flashing is too bad, usualy the ones with score mark through the centre of the comm.
Hope this helpsSeptember 24, 2011 at 12:02 pm #359860Martin

Not a blinding idea overall doing that. The bedding in process cannot be successfully applied at high speed anyway as the excessive arcing overheats and melts the com segments very quickly.
Low speed with moderate load (ie. empty drum) sufficiently slow enough not to create arching the only way to guarantee successful bedding in. A good way of achieving that is by carrying out a 90deg ‘service wash’ after first selecting a 600rpm maximum final spin. Leave that task in the capable hands of your customer after first emphasising the importance of the bedding in process to them.
Generally only those motors where the copper tails have badly scored the centre segments of the commutator are the ones likely to cause you this type of trouble anyway. They have been subjected to excess arching sufficient to bugger the armature up anyway. Only careful cleaning and skimming with a bedding stick first will stand any chance it wont arc badly once you’ve stuck a new pair in!
Advise your customer of the damage and that it’s possibly 50/50 of it failing in the near future in cases like these. We’re repairers NOT prophets, philosophers mystics after all.

simple
fit the carbons and run the motor off the machine. if its not ok take out the carbons and carefully file down the burnt sections with a flat file. of course on all carbon changes file the outer edges off anyway to allow for groove in armature. doesnt really add much time to the job. done half a dozen bsh last week.September 25, 2011 at 6:27 pm #359862Martin

FILE?…What , like a flat file someone might use to cut through the cell window bars? :con:
