ParticipantThe drum spins fine by hand, when I put it on spin this high-pitched noise seems to be emanating from the back of the drum. The machine reportedly trips the RCD at >800 RPM as well.
Can anyone tell from the noise what is likely to be going on in there?

Moderatorwell has to be drum or motor
i assume if you just select pump it does not make any undue noises

ParticipantPump is working fine.
The thing is, I could be mistaken, but it sounds like it’s coming from the drum rather than the motor.

Moderatorif you spin the drum does the silver drum seem to be in the middle of the hole or does it seem to wobble ?

ParticipantRight, I took the belt off and the drum spins much more easily and smoothly – so it would seem to be the motor that’s at fault…

Moderatorwell the motor is more likely to blow a trip as well

ParticipantCould be the motor bearings causing the motor to labour so hard that it causes arcing at the brushes, which in turn trips your RCD.

ParticipantUpdate: I’ve swapped the motor for one out of a donor machine (really bad design on this by the way: the removable back panel doesn’t include access to the bolts to remove the motor from the tank, and there isn’t enough clearance to get the bolts out with a socket and ratchet handle, I had to use a ring spanner). Now the machine seems to be working much better on spin – but I haven’t yet tried a full cycle under load; will report back tomorrow on that.
Thanks for all your replies gents!

ParticipantWell I’m pleased to say that following the motor swap, this machine is now running fine 🙂

ParticipantYep, motor bearing failure ( and or motor brush failure – very common ) on Bosch is not unknown. Prior to this, so before failure, the motor spins and sounds like sawing wood in a saw mill is a typical sound of motor bearing failure.

How dare anyone criticize the Great Lords of Design!
You are spot on, it is stupid design, nay a dangerous one too: that rear back cover screw hole point at 6 o/clock position can catch you out if your spanner slips causing your wrist to make a very nasty impact just shows you someone was not thinking straight at the design stage or much more than likely couldn`t give a toss ; all part of that German sense of humour. To make matters even worse for access there`s several bosch machines with this back panel that also has a riveted base plate too, that one is interestingly fun and games as you are supposed to remove the front panel to pull da motor out so all very time consuming; what a pain in the arse! -
