ParticipantMy washing machine gave up the ghost last week. I was sat in the living room and heard a loud bang and then smelt the dreaded burnt circuit smell.
A repair engineer came out and had a look today and diagnosed what he called the capacitor but which I suspected was the suppressor. It turns out it’s listed as a suppressor on many spares sites (FLCR 630501)
Now, I am not working and so money is tight at the minute. The thing is, the suppressor blew on it’s own. The machine wasn’t on at the time, which I find strange to be honest.
Should I be tempted to take a punt at buying the part for around £15 – or is there a chance that with it blowing by itself, there is a bigger problem afoot?
I am more than capable of doing this repair myself and just need a heads up as to whether I should cut my losses and not spend money trying spares, and simply buy a new machine.
Thanks for any advice, and hello, as I’m new here 🙂

It is not uncommon for the mains filter or suppressor to blow. 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time a simple replacement is all that is required. You may find it has blown the fuse unless you have circuit breakers installed.

Great stuff! 🙂 Now to source the cheapest place possible – thanks!

ParticipantRe: Candy AQ100 (aquaviva 1000) suppressor help please
What upset me about the engineer is that before even looking at the machine he said it was the circuit board! Now I used to work repairing car hi-fi and I know all the usual scams, so I immediately let him know that I did have some knowledge about these things (rather foolishly I’d missed the burnt connector on the suppressor when I removed the top off the machine myself. Just one connector is burnt black and was barely noticeable)
So the engineer had a closer look, then found the suppressor was burnt at the back when he removed it. I’d kind of already said that maybe this machine could do with replacing because it has a very long wash cycle (1 1.2 hours) so I think he felt he could push me that extra step.
I went back to the shop he operates from and saw a Hoover machine I liked, but they wouldn’t waive the £26 callout fee if I bought the machine there and then! This disappointed me to be honest. You;d think they would waive the callout charge for the sake of selling me a near £300 machine. But hey.
So I walked out of the shop thinking I’d see if I could source the part. The engineer had pointed out that obviously if I pay them a labour charge plus the suppressor cost and it’s blowing because of something else, then I have wasted near £80.
But seeing as I am more than confident enough of putting the part in and putting the machine back together I’m going to take a chance. Partsmaster seems cheapest at just under £20 inc. delivery.
So yes, sorry 🙂 He did charge me a callout fee. Just thought I’d fill in the rest of the story.
Oh and the Hoover machine they wanted £280+ for is £230 at Argos so I did the right thing either way really 🙂

Is Partfinder cheaper than THIS
Extended wash times are the norm on modern energy saving machines, less water means extended rinse times. Under 2 hours for the main 60° wash cycle is actually better than most.
PS. The Hoover machine is actually a Candy. 😉

Participanttrouble is, dont the candy/hoover supressor have the earth terminal on the bracket thats screwed to the machine?
although im sure it could be fitted

I have two different Hoover/Candy variants, one with a the bracket and a blue one without, both have an earth terminal on the top/end. I suppose that mounting a standard filter in place of the earlier one with the bracket may not be straightforward.

No partsfinder isn’t cheaper. I did do a search here in the parts section as well(and couldn’t find what I needed to be honest – I’m not knowledgable enough to know which suit the job. I can do the replacement but didn’t want to take any chances in case of any variables) but the benefit of the partsmaster one is that it’s the exact same model and was just a question of removing the wires one by one and clipping them on the new one (which yes has the earth bracket attached to it and looks like the attached link – although I suspect I am teaching you to suck eggs showing you what it looks like 😕 )

If you send an e-mail to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk and ask for a 91212795 suppressor I think you will save yourself a few £££’s. 😉

Ah ok. That’s fine then – thank you both very much for all your help. I have to say I’m still a little nervous because as I said, it blew while the machine was switched off (it was plugged in – but not actually running a cycle)
But I guess it’s worth a £20 outlay if it potentially saves me buying a new machine.
Cheers 😀
edit: You just edited your post or am I going nuts?

The mains suppressor is a capacitance device and as such there is a tiny “cross flow” between live and neutral for as long as the machine is plugged in. When the device starts to break down, bang. If practical, switch off or unplug when the machine is not in use.

ParticipantRe: Candy AQ100 powers up but doesn’t do anything!
Following on from the problem above, I sourced the replacement part and fitted it this morning. But now the machine powers on and that’s it. The program timer doesn’t tick and no attempt is made to start filling with water.
When the engineer came out he checked the circuit board and said it looked fine – no guarantee I know. But there are no signs of blown components, burnt tracking etc.
One thing puzzling me is that where the circuit board is on the right, I could have sworn it had 2 plugs plugged into it on the inside. The harness leading to it has 3 plugs, one is a 2 wire one (red/white) which plugs into the circuit board. There is also a bigger multi plug with maybe 8 wires and a smaller one with 4 wires I think it is. I was convinced one of those also plugged into the circuit board (I guess that the harness is probably a standard one that gets put in all machines and uses extra plugs depending on the machine capabilities?)
But it just feels like I’m missing something and that it should burst into life (wishful thinking?) Is there anything else I can check and is it right that just the red/white plug goes into the circuit board- there are plugs at the bottom of it but they run at the back of the circuit board.
I really need to get this fixed ASAP. Washing is building up and as the result of a motorcycle accident, carrying washing to the launderette is out of the question. And money is tight so a new machine has had to be put on hold. Getting desperate 🙁
Thanks very much for any advice.
