ParticipantI have fitted a Ranco VT9 K59 Universal thermostat to my Candy fridge freezer CCM 28/12G. This model has a single control for the fridge and the freezer in the fridge. The appliance now starts up, and cools, but although the freezer temp reached -21.9, the compressor stays on constantly. When I try turning the thermostat guage up and down there is no clicking noise and the compressor stays on. Tried putting an icepack onto the thermostat wire to make it cut out, but it stayed on. I wired it up in the same way as the previous thermostat.
Any advice or help much appreciated.
Thanks

Is stuff freezing in the fridge?is there ice building up on the back of the fridge,is the frost reaching where the thermostat phial fits,is the phial held tightly by the screw, one of these may
be the answer.
Was the old thermostat open circuit?November 11, 2009 at 9:43 am #303115Jewel

Thanks very much for the reply Spimps. The fridge and freezer are empty at present – I put a thermometer in the freezer and it got down to -21.9 and was showing frost on the metal parts. Tried putting an icepak on the temp sensor to make sure it was cold enough, but compressor would not cut out. Only left the appliance on for half a day as it was obviously running continuously, so there was no ice on the back of the fridge. The thing broke down a few days ago so we transferred all the food to another appliance and defrosted and cleaned it up before fitting the new thermostat.
If by ‘phial’ you mean the temp sensor at the end of the cable, it is held against the back wall of the fridge by a plastic plate which isn’t actually touching the sensor part. I have tried loosening it up to see if it makes any difference.
This link is the new universal thermostat, which is pretty much the same as the old thermostat

Thanks again for your help.

The phial/sensor part should be fairly firmly fastened to the back plate in order to sense the temp.
What’s the fridge temp after 3 or 4 hours.
open circuit simply means that the circuit is broken,no path through for the voltage, either by the switch being open or failure of the device, contacts in the switch/thermostat can break.
If when it’s running there is no feeling of cold or icing up on the back of the fridge then you could have a system fault ie ,short of gas or poor compressor performance, that could be laso why it rune continuously.November 11, 2009 at 10:22 pm #303117Jewel

Well, tried again today, its been on most of the day and it seemed to be cutting in and out to start with although the dial was on the warmest temp, so no room for manouvre for altering, the fridge temp was regulating between about 2.5 and 4.9.
However, the rear of the fridge wall is now getting iced up (it didn’t do this before the old thermostat broke) and the compressor seems to be staying on most of the time. Fridge got down to 2.2. Still also concerned that the dial makes no clicking or cutting in or out of the compressor when turned.
Looks like we need a new appliance.
Thanks anyway

Just for info – was about to buy a new F/F when I contacted the retailer who sold me the part on the offchance they could help. They informed me that the terminals had been switched by the thermostat manufacter in the years between them making the original and the new one. God alone knows why, or why the manufacturer nor retailer failed to provide wiring instructions with the part. Have switched the wires in line with the new instructions and hey presto – IT WORKS!
Thanks for your help

The theremostat has a wide differential,ie the gap between on and off temps, you can’t get it on by turning the dial if the sensor is below the temp required.
It’s bad practice to turn a stat on and off manually more than once as you can force the motor to start against pressure in the system which isn’t advisable. -
