    Hi guys,
My Parents gas oven is playing up, and just hoping somebody could help diagnose the fault so they don’t get ripped off, as they’ve had some very expensive quotes, which in my mind are ridiculous and they’d be better off buying new.
Anyway, the lower oven lights from the ignitor when you turn the dial to min, but when turned to any other position, it stays on minimum and the flame doesn’t alter at all, just stays like a pilot light.
All of the hobs and the upper grill/oven still work perfectly.
If anyone could tell me the correct part number for the offending part, I may be able to get a better price than they’re being quoted, and shop around for a reputable engineer, and at least I’ll know if the prices are reasonable.
    Many thanks in advance.

I’m no gas oven expert but from what I do know it sounds like the Flame Safety Device (FSD) has operated. The FSD may be faulty or the gas tap itself. I would advise calling in an approved Gas Safe registered repairer who will sort it safely without “getting ripped off” as you put it!

Sorry, no offence intended, but there are unfortunately a lot of unscrupulous people around.
Maybe I should have chosen my words more carefully, but they are in their 70’s and have been caught out before.
In this instance they have been quoted £150+vat for the part (over the phone without even seeing the cooker) and £80 call out plus £80 per hour plus any other parts required.
so that’s a minimum of £260, which is already the cost of a new cooker.
Hopefully you’ll forgive me for being a little suspicious, hence me coming on this forum due to it’s members being decent, honest people.
If the price they’ve been quoted is correct, I think I’ll still get them a new one, as it’s already 10 years old, and not cost effective in my opinion.

The manufacturers own service charges £105 labour (fixed irrespective of time taken) plus cost of part. An FSD or gas valve would not be anywhere near as costly as you were quoted. But I appreciate that that option too for a 10yr old appliance is not a viable option either. A new gas oven may be a more rational choice.
