ParticipantWent to an GE American F/F found Cap blown I was very surprised that it was an 80uf I’ve never had to fit one above a 40 even the Maytag I have at home is a 5uf.
It was fitted with a Danfos SC18?? I don’t have an HRP book now to check anyone out there know?
Thanks Kirk

Hi think you will find with sc18 compressors 80uf is not unusual i usually fit 60-80uf with no call back.

Hi Kirk,
80uf is normal on that compresser, this is a start capacitor the 5uf one on your maytag is a run capacitor.
As john sugests any 60 to 80uf will work fine.
hope that helps.Cheers Bob.

This is interesting, does this mean that the compressors I sometimes see with both a capacitor and and a start relay use the cap as a ‘run’ capacitor (why?) This would explain an AEG I once had with a blown top cap that was still working fine.
Were not capacitor start comps introduced along with hydrocarbons to provide a spark free start?
Any info would be most helpful.

Hi Mark.
The run capacitor is used to improve the efficiency of the compressor to achieve the A rating class, the run current drops quite a lot when the capacitor is in circuit. Some compressors will work without it fitted but not as efficiently.Cheers Bob.
