ParticipantHi, im trying to find out about how i can take card payments from customers, either over the phone or in the houses, is this something my bank should provide?, or is it another company involved,?
Just wondered which way you all take card payments, do you need some kind of chip/pin machine?,July 3, 2007 at 8:32 pm #219630admin

IMO, the best thing you can do is to go speak to your Bank representative, get some quotes and then when you understand it abit more, you can go and get different quotes from different Banks. Just like comparing Credit Cards….. and no, you don’t have to change Banks 🙂

It`s a standalone service but shop around coz the rates they charge differ greatly. And when they do offer you a rate tell them you`ve been offered it cheaper elsewhere.
Average rates are about £19 per month rental. 2-2.5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} for credit cards and 25p-40p for debit cards.

Afraid not. What I do is phone the shop with the customer`s card and do it as a customer not present. This needs special authorisation from the bank but doesn`t cost anything more.
I`ve never looked into mobile terminals but I think there was a thread on them earlier this year.

That’s a bit sore. 😉
I’ve had a thought on this subject for a while, but in the meantime, the cheapest option is using the FSB to get a discount, saved us a fortune as I am an FSB member. It was worth the membership to get the rate down to, IIRC, about 1.5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}

I did say average rates.
I claimed to be a memebr of an association and I too got good rates about 1.5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} and £15 but I don`t think they will give you that if you are just starting.
They ask questions like “how much will you take in cards?” which is difficult to answer if you`re just starting.
All in all it`s worth it in the end. 33{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of my turnover is in cards now and they are far better than cheques as you are assured your money.

Agreed.
If you use it and, it is a good marketing tool as many people would rather pay that way, it’s well worth giving them a bit of stick over the rates.
