The following is confidential and is not to be shared with any manufacturer other than those mentioned below as doing so will likely jeopardise the whole project – I have for sometime, since the setup of ‘f-gas’ been concerned that our industry will be forced out of the refrigeration repair area by either the Institute of Refrigeration or Gas Safe. I managed to get a breathing space from f-gas with the interim personal certificate but as you all know that expired in July of this year and only those with a C&G2079 or CITB certificate can now work on R134a systems. The manufacturers are now struggling to find qualified engineers and as such are having to either get commercial engineers or else scrap the appliances. After much discussion with various agencies I decided that the only way forward was to produce our own nationally recognized ‘domestic appliance refrigeration qualification’ Together with a C&G approved professor, I have now put together a course specifically for the domestic engineer that will cover – R134a/R600a, brazing/lockring systems, components – how they work and where they fit in the system, refrigerant recovery, fault finding and system recharging etc. The course will consist of modules of distance learning such as protocols, refrigeration theory etc followed by two or three days of workshop practical work and revision leading to a final test. Once completed and passed engineers will be able to work on both R134a & R600a systems. Sofar we have two manufacturers (Amica/Liebherr) supporting us with a likelihood of more to follow. The most crucial thing at this point is that we keep this under the WTA hat – already I have had to head off a number of companies/individuals/colleges that have thought they might start training and saw this as a pot of gold. It is not – anything that does not get f-gas approval will be worthless in law and leave us unable to fight our corner. The course is currently being approved by C&G with it being on the books before christmas and the first courses being available in February 2012.
Once again I’m keeping you guys in the loop, we are at a critical stage right now and the last thing I want is loads of idiots getting in my way and screwing up the process. Many thanks.

All I can say is, bloody well done! 😀

Now, IMO, we all need to stay stumph until February about it so it’s all signed, sealed and let whoever needs to, deliver it at the meeting.

At the risk of offending ,this MUST be kept between ourselves at this moment in time ,the right time to share this will present itself in due course.
Well done Ian and thanks for bringing it in to the WTA ,As I know that may not have been the case originally when you were working on it, hence the reason nobody knew about it ,its also thanks to Simon at Amica being so pleased with using mainly WTA members for his service provision that he has agreed to underwrite the costs ,I am seriously impressed that a company with the prestige of Leibherr have come on board as well .
If we do this right ,rolling this out at the Feb mtg will be a massive kick between the legs for some people in the room ….
