Change The Element On An Indesit FID20 ?

Hi there,

I’ll be ringing around shops tomorrow, but does anyone know how to change the element on an Indesit FID20 on the main (bottom) oven ?

I did a search but could not find any posts for this cooker.

I have an inbuilt cooker, so am wondering whether I can change the element from the inside, or whether the cooker will need to be removed first in order to change the element ?

It just blew earlier on today (at least I am assuming it was that that blew.

Top oven / grill works. Main (bottom) oven seems to operate. Light comes on inside, red light comes on when turned up to temperature, but never heats up.

Does anyone know how to change the element or even how I can ensure that it is the element that has gone and not something else, without paying Indesit stupid amounts of money ???

Looks like it is the standard Creda/Hoptoint design. One of the easiest elements to change.

Isolate from mains, remove shelves, take out the four screws securing the back panel, remove inner light cover if fitted and ease out the back panel.

The heater is secured by a single screw at the top and a small bracket at the bottom.

In most cases you will see signs of damage on the element casing, if not then you need to check it with a megger or multimeter.

There is normally enough length on the leads to allow you to pull them out a little to swap them over.

I do not know what a megger is or multimeter, but it seems that at this price, it is worth a go to see if it fixes it anyway.

If you do not know what a megger or a multimeter is then TBH you shouldn’t really be poking around inside electrical appliances. :rolls:

Please take extreme care and make certain the power is off first.

Its not a cheap part if you end up frazzled. 😥

Okay, I don’t know what the assumed level of knowledge is supposed to be before I start poking around but I have enough about me to respect electrics and to turn off, switch off the mains and check, double check, and triple check before hand.

That, at least, is abvious to me.

Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know that I managed to do this change today.

I’ve had the part for a while now, but what with other priorities, lack of ideal opportunities to switch the power off, lack of natural light, and a failed first attempt, it was only today that I managed to do it.

I couldn’t get the connectors off the first time as was too timid with it, so just connected everything back up again, did some more reading, and had a successful attempt today.

So thanx, iadom for the tips. Along with your help, and a lot more searching on the internet, I managed to find enough tips and guides for exactly how to do it and it went smoothly the second time.

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully someone can help me. I had the same problem as above, but having now changed the element I am still having the same problem…everything appears to work but no heat in the oven, I did suspect the thermostat but the red light in control panel is staying on too. Does it make any difference that my oven is the ‘fidm20’ model?

Did you check the original element before you changed it?

Did you test the new element before you fitted it?

The original one had a hole in it where it had blown, I tested the new one for continuity before and after I fitted it…although this was only with a 12v battery and very basic voltmeter…
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as i’m really looking forward to a roast dinner when its fixed!!

If the original had blown in that way it may well have taken out the oven stat or the oven control assembly. There are two separate components behind the control knob. 😉

It sounds like you need assistance from someone with all of the technical data and correct test equipment.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I can get my brother in law to have a look (he’s a maintainence electrician and knows more than me about this sort of thing!!) Whats the best way to check these 2 components, are there any tell tale signs that they’ve gone??

If it is the selector switch then sometimes the damage to the contacts is visible.

A continuity test on the thermostat is all that is needed on that.

Both the selector switch and the stat are quite cheap but you do need the full model number, thats FID20 plus any extra numbers or letters to identify correct parts.

Sorry for the delay…just thought i’d update the good folk on here.
The problem turned out to be the selector switch…although this wasnt visible from the top. There was a TINY piece missing from the underside which was stopping the power from going through the rest of the circuit.
