Re: Cheap electrical good, everything electrical, was it a s

I have been caught out with this scam – ordered and paid for a washer/dryer – 2 false deliveries etc etc. What is frustrating is the paypal system only consider cases if advised within 30 days. With this I paid on 1 September told deliver would be the 13th when it failed re-scheduled for 24 September and then by the time I reasised I’d been had 30 days had lapsed. Credit cards promise to refund for fraudulant payments over £100 but not if paid for via paypal.
I have learnt many lessons from this experience 😡 :

I did a search on ‘everythingelectrical’ on google and it looks like the mirror newspaper had a story running on the scammers. The link is no longer working so you need to go to the google cached page…. look down toward the bottom of the page

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache: … ical&hl=en

here is a copy of what it said……

    BUZZ OFF Oct 7 2004
HAVE you bought from an internet page called http://www.everythingelectrical.buzzsites.net which was offering cheap fridges and the like?

Based at a private house in Pontefract, West Yorks, the site has now disappeared and phone lines are dead. Cops and trading standards officers are investigating – if you are owed money, drop us a line.

looks like the link on google is wrong, it should be to the http://www.mirror.co.uk/investigate/ page.

The story is no longer listed on that page but there is an email: investigate@mirror.co.uk to post to if you have had problems as it said in the story on the cached page.

To let you understand, the margins on normal mass market appliances do not in any way, shape or form allow for massive discounting at all. In all honesty the best you can hope for is a good service and an honest price, bargains in this industry are rare without a catch of some kind.

That said I got a darned good deal on a TV recently. The Sony KD32DX51 (32″ Pure Flat Widescreen IDTV) retails for £850 in the Sony shop, Currys, Powerhouse, Argos etc etc. The Sony DAVSB100 DVD Home Cinema System retails at £200. I got both from a company called unbeatable for just over £650 (it would appear they aren’t doing the Home cinema system for free anymore – just had a quick look) – that I would say is one hell of a discount and it arrived next day!

Yes Dave, quite correct. However the margins in browngoods (the reference for consumer electricals even if they’ve been black and silver for years) is a totally different structure to whitegoods and offers retailers the chance to use sales tricks like discounting, intrest free etc. etc.. You also have to remember that they are (generally) much lighter and easier to ship, that also has a bearing.

However, the biggies are that traditionally retailers warrantied the products themselves which offered a far greater discount from the (supposed) retail price. Added to which many of the products are “return to base” for a repair, you can hardly ask a customer to bring a washer into the shop for a repair as most people simply couldn’t do it and, again, that increases the price of major kitchen appliances as servicing costs are obviously higher.

There are bargains out there to be had, I know as I’ve gotten some of them, but a retailer selling all stock at crazy knockdown prices and not just the odd special offer is, to me at least, extremely suspect. Sadly in this case the suspicions were not unfounded.

    K.
