All the machines I’ve seen made in the last 15 years or so, if the customer says the appliance has not been repaired before or has never had the brushes renewed, the ones fitted are invariably laminated. I take the attitude that if Hotpoint sell the black ones they must be be a pukka item. I’ve had a few of the white ones split down the middle so I’m less keen on them.

Why is this such a big issue? The machines are now dying out and the brushes are no longer the neat little earner we have had for so many years. My usage is down to about 10 pairs a week now, so I’ve kind of stopped worrying about them. 161460s only btw.
Much more relevant is the price of FHP brushes, which fit so many holders nowadays. Has anyone managed to find a source of loose ones to fit the extra long holders on the high spin AEGs and Zanussis yet?
Cheers,

5 x 12.5mm. 36mm is standard length, Maddocks do 12AG03 and 12BS03 at sensible prices – my query was the super-extra-long ones, which I have no idea of the length of. And to think I keep telling the Mrs size doesn’t matter.
Anyway, looks like Dave’s got an answer, thanks.

Chris – SEME do a Bosch replacement carbon at this size for £1.75 per pair PN:- W1-18102/A (2.6mm connection)
They also do another Bosch at £2.30 / pair ( 5 X 12.5 X 43 ) PN:- W1-18121/A (4.8mm connection)
These are very good quality carbons I have used loads of them. They will fit most black brushes holders around today with the silver inner, either by removing the connector and soldering the lead to the holder, or with the connector depending upon the motor. The main exception nowadays is the wider brush (usually in a bronze coloured inner) as used on Philips etc.
I use SEME W1-18105/A @ £4.75 / pair (in holders) for these.
I usually solder up a load of inners in the workshop using the 43mm carbons then i trim them flat under full spring compression to leave about 4mm protruding from the end. Before I fit them I file the angle on to suit the motor – takes a few minutes. I usually fit these for £42 so I make £40 of the job. When you price up some of these carbons and holders they are an unbelievable rip off. This way the the profit goes in our pockets. 😀
My price for the Connect carbons is £5.08 (1off) for a single brush not with holder. £6.50 for a pair

PS. As a matter of interest when you fit carbons using these type of carbons and holders do you remove the motor or do them from the front with the machine leaned back?

AHHHHHHHHHHHH BUT DO U KNOW THEY ARE ORIGINAL???????????????Basically all machines over a certain age had black orginally, the white have been dominent for a long time now so I was really meaning what I used to do several years back. Back then all were black apart from the newer 1200 ‘s.
PS. As a matter of interest when you fit carbons using these type of carbons and holders do you remove the motor or do them from the front with the machine leaned back?I lay the machines on their back if the hoses allow it. otherwise I lol it back against the wall or worktop.

Chris.Big issue? We is just havin’ a chat 😉
I tend to sell about 10 – 20 a week so I’m keen on good prices. Mind you I’m surprised they are still in demand.May 16, 2005 at 3:38 pm #133922brian

Been pondering this for a little while. The original 1600474 brushes in the hard, nearly white plastic holders were fine – on a newish armature that had not developed a “track” where the brushes run. Any sort of groove and the good old 161460 was the only sensible course of action. The second phase 1600474 brush in the translucent white, softer plastic holders, have been a complete disaster in my experience, even when fitted with a brand new armature. The holders melt under load, jamming the brushes and have written off more than one armature in my experience. This third version I have not seen as yet – no doubt because our local wholesaler ain’t going to let them out until they clear the current stock, which none of the Leeds engineers are buying ‘cos we know that they don’t work……….
I suppose the only real solution is to make the 161460 obsolete so we have to buy the damn things.
Cheers,
Chris. -
