I guess you won’t be doing work for that agent again? 🙁
That’s the first time I’ve heard of someone playing that trick though? Insurance companies and their ‘assessors’ yes but not your run of the mill letting agent – very odd 😕

well do I say no xxxx off, or take any more offered and add “MY” 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} and try to claw back my losses ?
I would advise anyone else to be aware of this. if one agent has started and gets away with it this it might soon snowball particulally as the economy starts to slow downwatch this space!

Unless this was made clear when the agent phoned you then as Martin says you should be demanding the full amount.
An arrangment by telephone is as good as a writen contract (proving it is another thing).
Did you tell them of your call charge? that should have been the point they mentioned the 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}.
I would contact them and say that no mention of deduction of your bill was mentioned at the time of booking and no offer was made to supply you with the terms and conditions in contracting you to work for them on behalf of their client.

Naughty – we do lots of this type of work and the handling charge is always back to the landlord, not the contractor.

i do work for a few but only 1 charges me a 12{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} commision on all repairs and sales.to be fair they told me to just add it to the price of the job but i bet the l/lord doesnt know about this surely he already pays a service charge to the letting agent to look after his property normally about 8-12{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the rent then he has another 12{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on every repair. not right.

as I said I do lots for diffrent agents with little problems and its a good earner. I thought it might help to put us all on our guard. as I said with the general property market slowdown and loss of earnings from sales some of the “sharper” agents might be looking to increase there profits from other areas.
dont think I didnt let them know what I thought. did get another call from them today and guess what……………………..?wilf 😉
