ParticipantHow many of you use a clamp on ammeter for testing ?
Has it helped you to diagnose a fault quicker ? any good tips out there when using one .
Was thinking of adding one to the tool box.

Wouldn’t be without mine, the most used tool in the box apart from the screwdriver and hammer 😆 £14 from Maplin and worth every penny.Multi and clamp meter in one. I’ve used one for 14 years now. I like being able to test current at the mains terminal.
You may just guess I like mine.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what do you use it for r.e. fault finding? Or is it just to tell you when heater kicks in?
I’ve got a cheap inductance tester to find broken wires, but intrigued to know why it’s so useful robbra?

clamp it round wires runnng to say a pump .. this will tell you if pump drawing to many amps – this faulty …
probally best used on a suspected dodgy compressor ..
basicaly if you know how many amps a component id supposed to draw – you guage this with what meter is reading????? something like that

When testing solid hotplate cookers you can easily see that all power settings work properly, Check to see if that heater you just fitted is working with no troublesome probing or even getting near the heater.
Best tool ever!November 8, 2010 at 6:30 pm #335234shaun67

Easy enough to figure out what amperage say a heater is drawing by using ohms law and then checking the heater to see if it’s round about the same value with a clamp on ammeter . Think I’ll have a look for one, are the cheaper ones any good ?? i would prefer one of those really small ones as i am running out of space in my bag 😆

Yep,
that’s the one I bought, it was only £14 but it was 3 years ago 😛
It is very good and the best thing over my old one is that if you forget to switch it off it does it for you so no flat battery on Monday morning 😳November 9, 2010 at 11:45 pm #335237 -
