ParticipantIt has taken me 5 months to write this . Back in January , I started having problems with my left eye . After visits to Doctors Opticians , and fin ally Hospital , I was diagnosed with a detached retina . After two unsuccessful operations , I am now blind in one eye . The other eye is not very good . I have had to give up work , and am unlikely to drive again . I am 65 in November .I am still trying to claim pension credits ,a form of state benefits for people over 60 .
I would like to thank all who have helped me in the past . I still look in to the website now and then . Incidentally , would anyone be interested ib aquiring my tail-lift ? Go on you tube and search for “Neptunes Tail Lift “
Best wishes to all Neptune .June 19, 2010 at 6:54 pm #323337TheSpinDoctor

KeymasterHi Neptune,
That’s really sad news. I can’t imagine having to live with something like that so I really don’t know what to say.
I do hope you do as well as possible for the future.

I have a brother who experienced similar problems at that age but several years on leads a decent life enjoying pastimes etc so try and be positive and get the best out of life you can,there are still things you will discover that you can enjoy,it’s never too late to learn new stuff.
Eye sight is something we take for granted until someone like yourself or my brother has a problem,then it makes you realise how fortunate we are to have all our senses in tact.
Wishing you all the best for retirement.
Hopefully will be retiring in a couple of years myself,although Cameron & Co may have the last word 😯

Hi Everybody , I am surprised and overwhelmed by the supportive messages I have received . My worst problems initially were that the surgery left me very weak , hardly able to walk , and deeply depressed . After about a month , I went back to the Doctor . He said that if was all in the mind .
So I decided that the solution was to give myself a good kick up the arse . I decided to get my pushbike out . The first day , I managed half a mile ,and had to sleep afterwards . Day by day I kept at a
it ., I now do at least 10 miles a day .My best daily mileage to date is 18 miles .I am working towards cycling from Lincoln to Boston , adistance of 33 miles , in one day .Several family members have agreed to bike with me . It should be a day to remember.
Initially I could not watch TV or a computer monitor , due to eye strain . Things are gradually improving . Incidentally , to anyone who needs to undergo surgery , modern anaesthetics are marvellous . No pain , and no sick feeling afterwards . So once again , many thanks for your comments ,and I wish you all well.
@Ian , [ Dales Electronics ] call in for a cuppa one day soon .June 20, 2010 at 6:55 pm #323349neptune

@Odom . Re tail lift . I will sell my tail lift separately , or with the van . Lift was built to fit a Kangoo van , but will fit in any similar vehicle . Lift cost me about £250 to build , but will take £100 . If you are interested , send me a PM . Regards , Neptune .June 20, 2010 at 9:49 pm #323350iadom

Keep up with the exercise, its one of the best ways to alleviate feelings of despair. Its a good thing you live where you do, a mile in any direction round here involves some serious hills.
Very sorry to hear about your of your travails neptune, all the very best for the future.
Jim.
