The fact is that unless the dosage is correct and likewise the temperature setting it doesn’t rinse away thoroughly and forms a sticky scum like deposit. Much like the scum ring around a bath tub. Continue washes this way and that scum builds and builds.

    Martin’s been paying attention. 😉

Essentially you need three things to clean, it’s basic chemistry that they teach in first year of high school IIRC but, ti was a while ago. It is exactly like cleaning dishes or much of anything else.

    You need:

      Water
      Detergent
      Heat

The exact quantity or levels will vary dependant on the level of soiling that you are trying to remove but, this is pretty much an accepted truth as well as (current technology allowing) a physical and chemical set of facts.

You need enough volume of water to allow the removed dirt or grease to be held in suspension in the solution.

You need enough detergent to remove the dirt to get it into suspension within the solution and, very importantly, to hold it there.

You need the heat to loosen the dirt and allow the detergent to do it’s job.

Very dumbed down but that’s the basic theory.

If you break a bit of that then bad things happen.

I’m not going to get it not it all but I will give you the most common and, it is a very common problem that’s widely reported and experienced. It’s the bad smell thing as, that only has one explanation, the inside of the machine is gunked up.

What is almost invariably the cause is consistent low temperature washing with liquid or a detergent with no bleach in it. Just one thing, temperature.

For sure the dose can cause it if it’s wrong as well but it won’t happen just so fast.

All the cycles are tested to meet the HLCC guidelines by every manufacturer and, it is a machine, it just does the same thing over and over again, if it fails to do that then it won’t work either mechanically or electrically. If an error is encountered it will not work.

It is true that the level of performance will differ from machine to machine but, they will all comply to the guidelines set out by the HLCC which determines the strength of the wash, the maximum temperature, hold time, spin speed and so on based on the program choice for the fabric to be cleaned.

Likewise the proper brand detergent manufacturers will comply to these guidelines, they have to, they have absolutely no option but to do so.

I cannot say the same for garment manufacturers.

Now in all of that we have to rely on users to dose with a decent quality detergent, at the correct or as close as possible level, select the correct program for the correct fabric being laundered. It is not uncommon for that bit to go sideways.

The dose needs adjusted to suit the solid level and, you need to use the correct detergent and temperature to get stuff clean.

If that fails then the dirt removed may not be held in suspension and sticks to the inside of the machine on more “rough surfaces” just as Martin’s example with the bath, same thing almost to a T.

Only, if you do this continually an, especially so if no maintenance wash is performed, then that “scum” if you like will just build and build and build.

In large part, the drain type is really an irrelevance in this regard.

I would tend to agree that the dose instructions are not as accurate or offer as much guidance as they perhaps might do.

Re: Clothes never gets rinsed properly

I think I will just stick to powder because I have problems with liquids all the time. They are absolute rubbish to rinse out of clothing. Currently put a full load of underwear on at 60C with 1 Ariel Excel gel liquid-tab and even after 4 rinses the soap is still in the clothes. So they obviously aren’t dissolvable and will return them to the store and get a refund. I can be 110{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain there is no build up in my machine because I did a 90C maintenance wash last week with Afresh so the problem lies with the detergent. Liquid detergents should be removed from sale in my personal opinion as from what I hear they are no end of problems.

Ill go back to proper detergent i.e. the trusted powder 😀
