    Re: complete engineer

The cost is reasonable I agree, my negative comments were aimed at GBdar and the software development company.

If they can’t even get their own web site completed correctly then it doesn”t exactly fill me with confidence in their products to be homest 😉

Over the last few months, as you know, Ken and I have looked at quite a few shall we say, they all claim to do pretty much the same as this one but are more often than not based on other software types and adapted to suit.

If they do have a demo available, I’d be interested to have a look at it 😀

    Dave.

    Re: complete engineer

If, like me, you’re doing contract work to any great degree and invoicing out on another package as well, like Sage or suchlike, then using these packages don’t solve all the problems for anything that is remotely a volume contract. For single users they’re fine as you only have to train one person, yourself. When you introduce that to others it’s very often confusing and seems a long way for a short cut, especially when you do not have the time to “mess about” with it.

It has always been and likely always will be my contention that technology is great and very useful indeed, but it has to be as intuative as it’s humanly possible to make it. When you look at a lot of the packages we’ve seen they totally fail on that count because they are generally designed by software engineers that have no idea about our business and, really, how simple it actually is. Take the NESN software, Call Manager, it’s desperately simple but just doesn’t cut it these days due to the lack of things like a proper diary and that cannot be added to it without huge expense, so it’s left out. The trick is to make it modular but to link the different modules so that the package can be tailored to each business’s needs.

However on the package that’s on offer here I have to ask just what sort of support there would be on offer for a mere £500? As, for the only one that I saw that would do what is required the basic cost was WAY over £10K, per business! What I want is what I saw, what I want it to do in addition to that and for a lot less than that as most of us just simply couldn’t even afford to look at it let alone buy it.

So to that end we instigated the developement of our own system which we’ve got some really, really cool stuff planned for in it and two developers working on it. The downside is that since I don’t have a pot of cash to hand it’s being developed on a shoestring budget and it won’t see the light of day until at best later this year.

But I am serious about it and you’ve already seen one little part of that project… Repairs@!

And that links into what I have planned as well but I’m not going to scribble down all the neat ideas (for others to steal) that we have, much of it there from actually listening to the people that do the job before a finger touched a keyboard. 😉

If you go to http://www.fixzone.com you can get a downloadable demo, not looked at it yet though.

Looks US converted to UK use.

    K.

Correction, it does look UK specific once I actually got to read the PDF sheet on it. 😳
