My trusty White Knight 767 condenser died the other night 🙁

The thermostat had tripped, so I reset that, but there is still no heat. The reset button hasn’t popped out again.

I’ve tried it on both heat settings to check that wasn’t an issue, and yes, it’s not on the cool spin! The drum still spins happily.

My guess is that the heating element has died. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much this will cost to fix (including the engineer’s labour)?

Is it worth getting it fixed? The machine was bought in November 2001 and has been used at least 2-3 times a week since then, so is something else likely to go wrong soon?

If replacement is a better option than repair, can anyone suggest a good model? It will live inside the flat and be used during the evenings / overnight, so one that doesn’t sound like a fighter jet taking off would be nice. Ideally I’d like to spend £200 or less, but could stretch to £250 if the extra cash would be worth it.

Probably just the element and it shouldn’t cost too much to put right, certainly well under a £100 if that’s all it is that’s wrong. Try Repairs@ or the directory for someone in your area or, if you get no joy there, give us your postcode and we’ll try to point you in the right direction.

I’d say it was worth replacing the element in it.

Re: Condenser driers – various questions!

Cheers – definately worth getting the engineer out then since even the cheapest new condenser would be £180 upwards.

I couldn’t find an engineer on the Repairs thingy – so if you could help me I’d be grateful. I’m in Putney SW15.

020 8866 6699 Capital Repairs should be able to help you out just fine.

Please do us a favour and tell them where you got the number from would you?

    Thanks

Re: Condenser driers – various questions!

Thanks for that – I’ll mention the site when I call them.

I took the back plate off the dryer out of interest and it appears that I was right about the element having blown. There’s a small box of wire coils (I assume they’re the heating elements – it looks like the fan blows through them and the power cable runs to them!) and half of the wires are broken. Also, the plastic housing they’re in are broken too. I guess the wires overheated and snapped.

Looks like a pretty simple job to replace. I’d be tempted to do it myself if I could find the part and trusted my wiring. Think I’ll leave it to the professionals though!
