My mother is soon to move house and wants a tumble dryer in the new place. Problem is that a ventilation hole would need to be drilled in the wall so to avoid this she’s thinking of buying a condenser dryer and simply emptying the water collector when necessary.

Are there any great disadvantages with a condenser dryer compared to the non-condenser type?

    Thanks

    On the negative side: –

They are more ‘high maintenance’ in that there’s more to regularly empty and clean than with vented dryers. (i.e. Condenser matrix, water container and lint filter)

More components within therefore more potential breakdown problems.

Less efficient, therefore more costly to run.

In confined spaces, poorly ventilated and cold ambient temperature environments they can create excessive condensation within the room. (Walls get damp, windows mist up and such…)

    …and on the positive side : –

Can almost fit anywhere, not necessary to be located directly alongside an outside wall.

No vent hose to poke through the wall or toss out an open window.

Hi, , problem is having to keep emptying the water container, some have an internal drain pump which gives you the option of being able to drain condenced water to its container or to your household waste pipe. try and get one that has the water container at the top as its a lot less hassel than getting on your knees to pull it out at the bottom. Also if water container is full half way through a drying cycle it will continue till end of cycle but with no heat so cloths will come out still cold and wet. A condencer can be situated anywere (except bathrooms!!!!!!!!!!!) have a great day Lisa

Thanks for the advice – I’ll put the negative points to my mother and see what she thinks.

Also, do condenser dryers manage to dry the contents as well as a conventional, hose outlet dryer?

BTW, anyone got any recommendations for particuarly good condenser tumble dryers please?
