ParticipantI’m about to replace my vented tumble dryer with a condenser model but I would like to know how they work. I have asked in Comet, Currys and other retailers and none of them seem to know, in fact some of them didn’t know where the condenser was fitted.
I know that the warm moist air is passed over the condenser to drop out the moisture and this water is captured in a removable container, but how is the condenser cooled?
Is there a small refrigeration unit inside the machine and is cold air blown through the condenser to keep it cool?A recent Which report states that some condenser models trapped just 41{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the water, the remaining 59{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} presumably ending up on the walls. I guess that the greater the surface area of the condenser, the more efficient it is in dropping out the water.
Which recommend the Miele, Bosch and the AEG Electrolux the latter seems to have the same condenser as the Zanussi range. The condenser on this does not have as much surface area as the Miele or the Bosch but is still recommended, so am I wrong?
I can’t afford the Miele so it’s a choice between the Bosch and the Zanussi and my wife likes the look of the Zanussi tumble dryers! The expert’s wisdom would be very much appreciated.

The condenser is a large aluminium box unit that is slatted to allow the flow of cool air through the condenser chamber. (Forced air cooling and not refrigerated cooling)

Your wife has made a good choice overall 🙂

Thanks for your prompt response
Looking at the Zanussi ZDC5370, does this model compare well with the Bosch WTE84107 which gets lots recommendations on this forum. They are priced about the same.

The sales guy in a local store says that the latest dryers have heat pumps, do the experts have any experience with these?

Speaking of over-priced condenser dryers…
Check out the Siemens WT46E386. It’s gorgeous, and more reliable than the Bosch IMO.
But the best thing, is not to get a condenser and stick to the vented. But if there’s nowhere for a vent…

There are no domestic dryers in production using heat pump technology, although the link above does outline some of the research being carried out.
