    Just a query really.

Some cooker elements have an earth tag and some don’t. Is there any real reason for the earth strap as surely the fixing screws give a good earth…

I sometimes manage to fix appliances by using a generic element that is the same dimensions and same wattage as the original but I am a bit concerned about not fitting the earth strap.

I wonder if there is a British Standard or BEAB approval that dictates which appliances do or do not require internal earth connections to components.

    Any comments?

I fit a crimped ring tag instead of the amp tag and secure it under one of the screws. The only exception that comes to mind is the Bosch / Neff fan element that has the earth tag missing. In that case, I will attach the wire to the fan motor mounting plate with a screw. Better to leave it secured than just loose. 😉

    Re: cooker element earth connections

I have often wondered this myself and to be honest I aways reconnect the earth to the element using a ring crimp under one of the fixing screws.
My reason for doing this is that the design of the appliance for whatever reason has such a connection within its specifications and in the event of someone like one of us not reconnecting a secured earthing bond like the ones in question would there be a future issue in the event of a problem which could be laid at the door of the independant repair engineer ?

I don;t know the answer to this so have always tried to be careful with this issue. The fact that other manufacturers don;t have such belt and brace designs is curious.

The screws should provide a good earth so long as they meet bare metal in the case that is also grounded.

However you have to remember that many machines are pan-European and there are some countries (Spain is one IIRC) where an earth is not required to the actual machine. Don’t ask me why, I dunno, but it could be something to do with that.

Only found that out when I kept getting a jolt off a hob in a holiday flat many years ago and they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with it. Went looking, found no earth at all then inquired as to why and, apparently, it isn’t a legal requirement in Spain. Go figure.

There’s everyone laying in the sun, knocking back the Sangria and enjoying the view.

Now we know how you get your jollies on your hollies Kwatt, running round checking the local electric supply and moaning cause you forgot to pack your toolbox !

Really you need to chill man.
