KeymasterI have recently moved into a house with a built in cooker. An AEG B2.60D. When we put the oven on the circuit breaker at the consumer unit trips. The oven looks as if it hasn’t been used and the shelves etc were still in their wrapping in the oven. The house had been empty for about 2 years before we moved in. We have no documents etc for the cooker. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be and if it is easy to fix.
thanks
Steve.

Steve,
You will certainly need an engineer in to check it out to be on the safe side. See our “Directories” listing in the Navigation Bar and type in your Postcode 😉
I suspect however it may simply be due to residual dampness within the appliance and a good ‘dry out’ in a heated room may cure the problem over several days. RCD trip switches are very sensitive after all for your safety.
Try that first 😉

Hi,
This is probably due to damp in the heating element. It happens all so often in our are where the humidity is more than 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, more than 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time.
Open the BS13 plug and disconnect the green and yellow earth. Put the plug back in the socket and turn on the heating elements full power for 40minutes. If it trips during this process, have the element replaced. If it doesn’t, then keep heating the oven until 40 minutes is up.
Then replace the earth wire. Don’t suggest that you touch any part of the oven chassis during the heating up.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE CARRIED OUT UNLESS YOU RE A TRAINED ELECTRICIAN.

Steve
You fail to mention whether the RCD (thingy with a test button trips) or the MCB (individual circuit breaker trips). I strongly recommend that you have a qualified individual look at the cooker. A qualified individual will be able to check the insulation of the cooker and the RCD trip levels as required.
Either way, you could have an insulation failure. In my view, NEVER disconnect the earth 😉

I think steve would have had his cooker sorted by now as his query was in january!
as for anyone reading this thread – DO NOT DISCONNECT THE EARTH WIRE on any appliance! :zap:
call an engineer to have it repaired and tested for electrical safety.
