My brother has just recently re-modeled his lounge, and had to get the gas fire removed. He calls British Gas…”Sorry Sir, don’t do that kind of work call a local Corgi registered Plumber!”….they recommend he calls a local firm (in the next street) who come round and inspect the gas installation. They need to access the stop cock etc etc. In doing so, condemned his Gas Boiler stating the ceiling is blackened by uncombustable substances and he was obliged to cut off his supply and seal it until rectified. Also the vent in the kitchen was suitable only for single glazing and as he had double glazing the vent had to be enlarged. Quoted around £1000 to complete.

At which point my brother told him politely to go away. He called me and I put him onto a mate of mine (Corgi Registered) who inspected, agreed the vent needed enlarging but the boiler (just 4 years old) simply needed a service and the blackened ceiling was just staining caused by a previously leaking shower tray upstairs, discolouring the plasterboard. He sealed off the gas fire, enlarged the vent and serviced the boiler. Job done in 3 hours……..£185 inclusive!!!!!!!

Moral of the story…..Beware of a Corgi Registered Cowboys …Oh, and British Gas of course!

Martin, has your brother reported the 1st guy to Corgi ?

He should really have used a test probe to check for non-combustable escapes and CO etc.

Black marks around a gas appliance are purely a visual indication that there could a problem.

It’s a bit like telling a customer they have a leeky pump without taking the back off and having a look, but not quite as expensive as a boiler mis-diagnosis.

Nah! First thing I asked him was “Did he put it in writing?”…No!…so no evidence to pursue here I’m afraid as I would love a go at this one!

He should have put it in writing and issued the relevent notification. Problem is though if you go to repair, install one appliance and you have to visual check other appliances around as you are the last responsible Corgi engineer in the premises. If you feel there may be a chance that there is a fault you have to advise and issue the documentation and take the necessary remedial action. You have to cover yourself . There are going to be times when there is no spillage it could have been weather conditions etc.

But it is better to be safe than sorry.
