I have got a Whirlpool side by side (with 8 years parts warranty). Inside the fridge, on the right wall, there is a crack about 4 inches long. It looks like the plastic has gone brittle. So my questions are:

Is this something that I need to worry about?

    and

if I do need to worry about it, should it be covered by the parts warranty?

    Thank you

Yes, you need to worry about it.

Moisture will get in there, into the foam and cause what is known as an “insulation failure”, that is to say that the insulation will not be keeping in the cold air and keeping out the hot air as it should do. This will lead to extended running times and possibly a ball of ice in the fridge where there is no insulation from the moisture that builds up.

If it’s caught early enough there is a special sealant that can be used to repair it but I suspect that, at the age, that ship has long since sailed. 😉

How it’s handled by Whirlpool’s warranty I’ve no idea.

As an interim measure it would be good advice to put some tape over the crack…some tough white plastic packing tape is ideal but good ol’ sellotape will do at a push. I have seen fridges last many years patched up this way so if Whirlpool can’t help you at least the machine should be ok 😉
