    Hi All
I have the above washer, model 17086, which although is getting on a bit (nearly 10 years old) is still in good condition and I feel there is more life in it yet.

However, recently the power light has been flickering a bit when the door is shut and the switch is on. Then when the light stops flickering and stays on the washing cycle begins correctly.
Yesterday, the power light would not come on at all.
With the door open, the light is on, but as soon as it is closed, the light goes off and the washing cycle will not start.
This is strange because if anything it is the opposite of what you would expect under normal operation.
The door latch switch seems to be functioning correctly, i.e. goes short-circuit when pressed in, but somehow this doesn’t seem to be processed correctly.
Does anyone think it could be the logic board as I suspect?
Any other suggestions to try would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

Plastic on/off switch melting was always a good bet on these and can cause similar symptoms. Otherwise, perhaps the timer control unit, but this is very unusual.

    Power off if investigating, please.

Many thanks, Penguin45 – it was indeed the on/off switch causing the problem.

Fortunately the problem was on the neutral side within the switch, so simply joining the 2 neutral wires to the switch cured it. This should be acceptable as they both simply provide the return path for the current.

    No parts required! 😀

    Thanks again.

It’s a double pole switch for your own safety….. The switch is only a couple of quid, so I’d get one ordered up through spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk as soon as possible.

    Regards,
    Penguin45.

Well, well, well what have we here but a classic case of a dangerous, foolhardy and irresponsible bodge-up! 😯

They do indeed both provide that vital return path, the key word here is both, let me make that clear first up. And both are in place to ensure total safety because if for example the plug was incorrectly wired or your machine had an earth fault. A single pole switch (which is what you are left with here) will not ensure a return path for the current you will. Or whoever is unfortunate enough to use the machine after your triumphant bodge!

    :zap: :zap: :zap:

Please tell me you will do as my colleague Penguin45 suggests and buy that replacement switch before you ever use that machine again? 😉

We not only have your safety and that of your family at heart here but all those many who may read this thread and think they can do the same. We do not take our responsibilities in that regard lightly my friend.

Live long and prosper from the extra knowledge gained! 😀

Ok, ok, I’ve been told!! 😳

I’ve put in an enquiry for said switch on this site, and I won’t be using the machine until it arrives!

The bodge was done because the guy in the local spares shop told me the switch only comes in a bank of four and costs around £50 – no excuse really, I know. Also, I wasn’t aware of the implications.

Oh well, not a good start – managed to upset the mods with my very first post… 😕

Far from it, your confession absolves you totally, thanks!
