    Hi

Following on from an earlier post, my washing machine (model 17086) now doesn’t seem to heat the water.
About a month ago, the bank of 4 switches needed replacing ( a common problem apparently) as the power light was not coming on and the machine was not doing anything. Expert advice gratefully received from this site!

I replaced the switches and ensured they all operated correctly, e.g. the ‘full load’ switch worked by adding more water, and of course the on/off switch worked fine.

Now to be perfectly honest, I could not swear that the heater worked correctly ever since the switches were fitted. I should have checked at the time, but assumed it would as it had been before.
I was very careful not to tug on any wires when I fitted the switches (to possibly pull any from their contacts). Also I was careful to make sure each wire was connected to its corresponding contact.

Are there any simple continuity checks I could make before looking deeper?
The plug will, of course, be out!
    Thanks.

This machine should complete the wash if it senses no rise in temperature after a set period. Some people don’t even know their machine is not heating. Poor wash results on heavily stained clothes is the usual complaint. The heater itself contains an thermal cut out device, if this fails, as they do from time to time, a new heater is required.

Continuity and resistance tests on the element itself would be the first place to start.

We would need the serial number to correctly ID the element, there are two alternatives.

Ok, thanks iadom, I’ll check the serial number tonight.
Would you know approximately what resistance reading I should get across the element?
Also, is there easy access to the appropriate wires from the top of the machine, for example at the ‘Economy wash’ switch which prevents any water heating?

As you say, the machine works fine otherwise, but does ‘rush’ through the cycle quicker than normally…… and of course the water remains cold.

Front panel has to be removed to access heater, resistance about 20ohms. You can fit the later heater to the earlier machine but not vice versa. Part number 1602026 available from here.

Hi again, the serial no. is 36130532.

When you say the front panel, do you mean the small panel containing the switches and soap drawer?

    Thanks.

The part number I gave you will fit, it will have an NTC fitted in the heater but yours may have it mounted on the face of the drum, it will fit either way. You have to remove the whole of the front panel, also removal of the heater is a little tricky, remember our repairs@ section if yo don’t feel confident of going further.

PS. This machine was heating up after you replaced the switch panel wasn’t it ?

I’m not entirely sure (see top post)! 😕

Assuming it wasn’t, I’m wondering if there may be a problem with the wiring to the ‘Economy wash’ switch, i.e. somehow it’s ‘on’ the whole time, bypassing the heater.
Do you know if I can make a simple resistance check of the wires going to this switch before removing the whole front panel to get to the heater?

It is unlikely you will be able to test the heater itself from the economy switch, the heater circuit involves the control unit, pressure switch and economy switch. Have you tried it with the economy switched ‘ON’, you may have your connections wrong on this switch if it has not worked since you fitted it.

Yes I have tried it with the switch on, but still no good.

I’m going to have to take the front off and check the heater resistance……
I’m beginning to think it’s just a coincidence that the element may have packed in soon after fitting the new switches.

Thanks for all your advice, iadom.
