ParticipantHello you helpful people!
Having further problems with this machine, it simply isn’t doing the job.
Clothes come out partially washed, some arn’t even wet! It did a wash cycle a few days ago and it tripped the fuse. Since then it hasn’t been washing properly, it hasn’t tripped the fuse again, but the dial appears to be clicking excessively when going through the rinse and spin cycles.
I have tried reducing the load quantity, checked the water inlet and outlet hoses and connections and they don’t appear to be blocked. i did a prewash to check water was going in and it is.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what could be the problem and what I need to check (and eventually fix) I’d be grateful.
Cheers

Don’t keep trying to run the machine, it sounds as though your motor brushes have worn away. The circuit breaker or trip may have prevented further damage and if lucky you will just need a set of brushes.
Plug out at all times when you have the lid off.Jim.

If it is the brushes, how will I know? Is this something that I can check myself or even fix myself? Is it expensive or difficult?
I don’t want to spend a lot of time and money on this machine if it can be avoided.

UNPLUG MACHINE :zap:
you will then see the motor and brushes (see link supplied by iadom)
if the carbon sticking out of the holder is less than 10mm
it is probably them at faultJuly 20, 2007 at 8:08 am #221626canshefixit

I have located the carbon brushes there is some black dust, I am unable to remove them, they don’t appear to be held in with any bolts/screws etc, any tips? The motor is at the top and the brushes are on opposite sides of the centre.
Thanks for getting me this far – sorry for being a ditz and not picking up on the links straight away!July 20, 2007 at 8:35 am #221627iadom

If you look at the picture here, http://tinyurl.com/2gnrog you should be able to see the small barb or lug that keeps the brushes in place, at the bottom of the left hand one and on top of the right hand one. You have to depress this to slide the brushes complete with holders out of the motor.

Thank you got them out! They are both in quite a state, both carbon brushes are worn down, black, one is so worn down there is metal showing in the centre, the holders themselves appear undamaged, am off to order replacements…

Replacement carbon brushes arrived promptly – thank you uk whitegoods.
Seem to install simply enough – tabs unfolded to open out brushes, machine drum went round on spin cycle. Am running complete cycle. Drum does not appear to be turning during rest of cycle – any ideas? 😕

Most of the time if the drum will spin then it will wash. Possible causes of no wash action, loose connections to the timer dislodged whilst working on it, a faulty armature ( does the machine make a loud buzzing/humming noise when it should be washing). A faulty control unit damaged by constanlty trying the machine and blowing the fuse or tripping the RCD.

The machine doesn’t make a lound humming or buzzing noise during the cycle. I can look at the timer and it’s connections, but how would I check for a faulty control unit or faulty armature?
Cheers

If it starts to spin quite smoothly and without seeming to drag then the armature is more than likely OK. Other than a quick visual check on the green, track side of the control unit for blown or lifted tracks the only way for you to check is to replace it. Unfortunately I think it would be over your budget to replace the control unit.

I’ve had a look at the timer dial, reinstalled it, tried running the machine, it no longer spins at all, just hums, guess we’re off to the laundrette…
