Bought a 2nd hand single door larder creda 86202 (no ice box) to keep in the garage… Basically it struggles to get & keep sufficiently cold ….
From first switch on… compressor jumps into life…. and cools down … but over the ensuing hours / days then doesn’t seem to switch on as much as expected … it can be as warm as about 12c in fridge and down to about 3c (by my thermometer)…

I bypassed the thermostat (k59 L4106) … ran it for an hour and it cooled down to about -5c no problem…. so I suspected thermostat… and am about to replace… but 2 nagging doubts ….

    1) when themostat bypassed … a couple of times I’ve switched off/on at mains and compressor hasn’t sprung into life …. but generally it does…
    2) thermostat seems to pass very basic test (eg gives open circuit when switched off and zero resistance between teminals when swiched on).

Could it be compressor/starter relay problem?
On the basis that thermostats are quite cheap – I’m tempted to try replacing it anyway…. on that count … cheapest universal thermostats (vt9) have 3 terminals (labelel 3,4& 6)… wheras original had 2 (3 and 4 with white wire on 3 and brown on 4) … I’ve had confliciting advice on wiring to new one … some say use 6 & 4 … some say ignore 6 and use 3 & 4!
    Thanks for any advice! 🙂

Re: Creda 86202 thermostat / compressor

Sounds like stat,if you switch a fridge or freezer off then on straight away the compressor has to start against system pressure which it has been creating in order to have the cooling effect. ,it has a built in protector to prevent damage as this can overheat the windings and damage the compressor..
Normally the compressor won’t be asked to come on for 10 minutes or so by the thermostat by which time the pressure in the system has equalized so the compressor isn’t facing much starting torque.
Never switch on and off straight away, allow at least 5 minutes minimum before switching on again.
If it achieves – temps when the stat is bye passed you can almost certainly blame the stat,so I would change it.

    Thanks – great explanation – I’ll buy a new stat…

Can anyone comment on the wiring of a 3 terminal rather than 2 terminal stat …
(ie how I should connect a cheap universal thermostats (vt9) which have 3 terminals (labelel 3,4& 6)… wheras original had 2 terminal (3 and 4 with white wire on 3 and brown on 4) … I’ve had confliciting advice on wiring to a new one … some say use 6 & 4 … some say ignore 6 and use 3 & 4! )
    thanks again

How cold is it in your garage? If it is too cold then your fridge will not work properly. Ther is an article wriiten somewhere on the forum but I cannot find it.

Didn’t spot the garage bit, take it in the house and run it there for a couple of days before buying stat, cold ambient temp could be the culprit. If inside it’s still the same you know it’s your stat.
