ParticipantFan oven element was in bits so I fitted a new one but the main fan oven and conventional oven still won’t work, although the grill for the main oven still works. When the thermostat is turned fully off the oven neon glows at about half brightness then goes to full brightness when turned up. This suggests to me a neutral fault (assuming the live is switched) but I don’t have any wiring diagrams for Merloni appliances. My instinct tells me it’s a problem with the oven selector switch but the contacts are visible on this one and they look OK. I checked the door switch but on this model it seems to just turn off the grill when the door is closed. I tried bypassing the thermostat and the timer but no joy. I did a continuity check on the rear TOC but did not try bypassing it so I suppose it could be breaking down under load. That would not explain the half glowing neon though. Any suggestions much appreciated.

When a fan element really blows big time (especially if the consumer unit is a fuse wire job and not RCD) then likely as not the weakest link in the chain reaction is the oven selector switch. The contacts may look OK but it’s not that easy to really be sure unless the whole unit is taken apart to be honest.
My money is on the fan oven selector switch needing replacing? 😉
I’ll keep my fingers crossed meanwhile… 🙂

As it happens I did order a new switch today as they are not that expensive from Masterpart. It’s always good to get a second opinion though

It was the switch, though I could have repaired the damage without need for a new one as it was just a copper link between 2 terminals that had blown, not the switch itself. This is why all the contacts (which are visible from above the switch) appeared OK.
