My 3 year old Creda tumble drier has developed a short circuit. Not enough to blow the 13amp plug fuse, but the main domestic circuit protection unit trips out every time I switch the drier on.

Could be anything in all honesty, you’d really have to open it up and see what you can see. Any obvious burning or arcing marks would give you a steer to begin with.
But, almost any electrical component can cause an RCD to trip.

Usually caused by a failure to keep the condensor clean as advised in the user manual. This allows the back of the condensor chamber to get gunged up and then water gets sprayed onto the elements.
Remove the condensor and clean it out, best way is to blast it through with a pressure hose or an outside tap if you have one.
Lie down on the floor and reach right back into the condensor chamber and pull out any gunge that is clogging the channel along the back.
Remove the small back panel screws, lift the panel back gently and dry out the heater and stats with a hairdryer.
