Hello I have a Creda W220VW which is around eight years old. I now need a new door seal and pump for which I have been quoted approx £120. The question is given the age of the machine is it worth repairing or should I buy a new machine.
    Many thanks David

tot cost of parts from site shop under £30 plus p&p

this is retail price and your trader will make a profit at this so £90 does seem very steep as a fitting charge

Take care with that pump, this machine is between 14 and 10 years old, the later models have a sealed drum so use a different pump.

You can tell which type you have by removing the lower front plinth. Behind that will be either a flat red plastic disc or an unscrewable pump filter at the bottom right.

The pump that Dave linked to above is the correct one if you have the flat plastic disc on the right.

Correct pump for the sealed drum is HERE

Thanks for the reply. I have checked behind the lower front plastic plinth and there is neither a red plastic disc or a fixed pump filter as far as I can tell, just a metal sheet with a few screws etc.

If there is no sign of a round black or white pump filter then you have the screwed drum, if so then the first pump is the one you want. It does however mean your machine was made before 2005. 😉

They could well have been using up some of the older Hotpoint chassis parts.

Re: Creda W220VW repair or replace

I think that must be the case because I had to have a new main bearing after it was just out of warranty and I don’t recall having a whole new drum assembly fitted so I think it must have been the screwed drum. It looks as if I have had the machine longer than I thought, I am beginning to think that I have had my moneys worth out of the machine and the current faults are probably just the start of problems. A new machine looks like the answer, but how to choose the best of a bad bunch. Many Thanks David

If the bearings are still sound then I would go with a new seal and pump. Have the motor brushes ever been changed?

I checked and I actually purchased it in Jan 2005 so you were spot on with the year. I cannot detect any sign of main bearing wear, i.e. The drum turns smoothly, and the brushes are still the original ones.

A set of new brushes and changing the door interlock plus the pump and seal should get you another five years out of it.

Re: Creda W220VW repair or replace

Hello, if I can get that done at a reasonable price then I think that would be a better option than most of the new machines available which probably wouldn’t last five years anyway. I’ll get some more quotes and see what the cost is. Many Thanks again for your help.

Re: Creda W220VW repair or replace

Hello, just to let you know that I managed to find a local repairer who came the same day that I called him, had all the required parts on his van and carried out the work for a total of £100, which I thought was a very fair price, excluding the brushes which did not need replacing. The machine is now running much quieter and hopefully will last a few more years.

    Thanks again for your help.
