ParticipantI have a Creda 1000 ecowash washing machine. It’s about 11 years old and has been problem free. Recently the drum has been rocking up and down and side to side and it’s very noisy on spin. Also there are oily black marks on clothes in a dotted pattern, suggesting there is grease or something coming through the holes in the drum. Also there are small bits of shredded black plastic mixed in with the washing.
I took it apart and found that one of the two stabilizing springs that connect from the top concrete block to the body of the appliance had snapped. I repaired it, and also replaced the rubber door seal which I noticed had split. I thought the split seal was maybe the cause of the dirt getting in, but I have just used the machine using old rags as a test, and although there were no greasy marks apparent there were still bits of shredded plastic, so it’s obviously not to do with the rubber seal, unless there’s stuff left over which hasn’t all worked it’s way out. But I’m not sure that the faulty rubber seal would be the sole cause of dirt getting into the machine..there must be some stuff getting between the drum and the outer casing but I’m not sure where it’s coming from. Also the drum was still rocking when I tested it, so the stabilizing spring was obviously not the answer.
Is it worth repairing as it’s so old? I can’t really afford a new machine at present!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.November 6, 2008 at 12:11 pm #267611Washman

Hi
Most likely drum bearings and spider need replacing.

Also the suspension rods seem to be at an angle..is this correct or should they be upright?Cheers

Suspension rods should be fairly upright, just a very slight inwards lean.
Sadly the marks on the clothes and the bits of plastic suggest as Mike says that you have a drum support failure.
A very common failure, particularly in soft water areas or if you use liquid detergents and only do low temp washes.
If it has started to shave off the plastic drum front then there is a good chance that the heating element is also damaged.
It should still be a viable repair, if you have to change the drum support and bearings there is a very strong possibility the machine will still be working long after the rubbish that masquerades as Hotpoint/Creda that is sold today has become landfill. 😥

Thanks guys, very helpful. I’m in a hard water area but we do use liquid detergents and low temp washes. Suspension rods do lean in slightly so they’re probably ok.
I’m wondering if I should call it quits as I’m only a handyman, and replacing the drum bearings and spider sounds like a complete strip down, don’t think I’m competent enough. If I call someone out I’d probably be better off buying a new machine! But which one!? Can’t afford Bosch or expensive makes so which budget makes would be recommended!? Obviously not Hotpoint by the sounds of it! I just don’t like adding to the environmental landfill so I like to repair things if I can!November 7, 2008 at 3:42 pm #267616iadom

If you are thinking of buying anything under £250 then you would be strongly advised to have your machine repaired. You would, like as not save around £150 and have a much better machine than all of the sub £250 tat on the market.
Drum spider and bearing change for a competent engineer is a 45 minute job at the most.
Try the link at the bottom of this post to see if we have someone in your area.
Most of them will give you an estimate over the phone for a support & bearing change.Jim.
