ParticipantFirstly: this macine is 8 years old, purchased Jan 2012.. so I a prepared for “It’s not worth fixing”
As per title machine is Currys Essential C510WM11 washing machine.
I have check and cleaned drain filter, inlet and drain hoses and detergent drawer.
If I try any wash cycle the machine will: –
– drain any water currently in drum (I can confirm the drain pump is spinning and water is drained out)
– fresh water comes in through detergent drawer and enters the drumThen rather than move into a phase in which the drum starts turning it stops and gives the following error signal/code: –
the 60 temp light is on solid
the cold and 40 tmep lights flash on and off
this flashing is accompanied by and audible beep boop beep boop cycle (apologies for poor sound description)I have not found any error codes for this machine online.
I am looking for help on diagnosis and posible fixes.
We were looking to replace this machine as part of a house move; unfortunately it has given up before we can complete the move.
As per opening line, I am prepared for the fact that we may need to just buy a replacement ahead of our move (just wanted to avoid moving a new machine between houses)
Thanks in advance,
Neil

ParticipantAt 8 years old it`ll most likely be the motor brushes carbons worn out so check those first each carbon bit should be just over an inch long when new. If so and your machine is fitted with a Welling motor ( it`ll have a motor label ) use Indesit part number C00196539 or the pattern ones. The original brushes as far as I know are not obtainable and never were only a complete motor = lots of spons.

Participantandyjawa Thanks for the reply. Like an idiot I didn’t think to look at the brushes when I was cleaning and checking hoses etc. To be honest wasn’t even sure if it had brushes. Sounds like it’s definitely worth checking thoes before buying another machine.
I spoke with a local repairer today who said his callout would be around £65 then cost of fix; so on an 8 year old cheaper machine probably not cost effective.
I’ll check the brushes and see what I find.
I assume I will need to check and clean the armature as well? (it’s been longer then I can remember since I helped Dad replace brushes on washers :0) )

ParticipantHi. Thx for getting back. I`d leave the commutator part of the armature well alone if I was you other than blowing off brush dust. You have not mentioned it but commutator cleaning sticks cause problems so do not be tempted as they are really meant for armatures set up to spin on a lathe. These Chinese made machines can be long lasting, from memory yours is a badged Haier and very similar to a Haus brand version, come to think about it a couple of Russell Hobbs too. If it is the brushes your best bet is to run the machine through a complete wash cycle to allow them to “run in”. On your model it is best to remove the motor and change the brushes rather to faff about with it propped up with your bonce under the machine; more time consuming but much easier given the front concrete weight gets in the way off a normal length screw driver. Match your duff brushes ( assuming I`m right ) to the part number I gave you to double check via a picture off the net note the the brush`s carbon angle points either to the left or right to match those up to what you have since there is another set floating around that looks identical but isn`t but I cannot remember what model / make they fit.

ParticipantI can’t see a label on the motor identifying it as a Welling, at least in situ (see picture).
However the brushes do look like the part no. you stated (Indesit part number C00196539) see pictures and link to part.
Although there is another part (SKU CAR73) which look the same, at least in the pictures.
I will email the shop to confirm before ordering.
EDIT: photos exceed size limit (of PHP interestingly) will crop and upload later.

ParticipantTo be honest a currys essential machine lasting 8 years alone is an achievement , so hats off just for that seems better than most modern bosch etc.

ParticipantYEP they are the same 1 is a pattern part of t`other one. Just make sure the angles are the same points to left OR points to right to match up your new pair up.
Hi Gokhk. Yes agreed I have a Haus 1050 version which is about 10 years old if not older until it was no longer in daily use, was next door neighbours until she passed away then her family gave it to me some days later. I do not use it but it still works fine classed as a back-up in the garage….`cause you never know? Nice old fashioned buttons and electronics. Some of these Chinese made machines are actually not that bad, Statesman for example are quite well made too, the aged 3 I have seen are straight forward to repair but that is very limited experience. On the spares front they helped me out on only the 3 ocassions I needed spares with no trouble, maybe I just got lucky?.August 19, 2020 at 10:56 pm #471298_Neil
Participantandyjawa thanks for clarifying. I got a prompt response from parts email query suggesting the pattern parts as well. Pictures look like the ‘slope the right way’. Just ordered. I will updated once I have them fitted.
Gokhk I know! I knew we had, had it a while, but when I checked the purchase date and it was 8 years I was impressed. If I can get a bit more out of it with new brushes even better. I was prepared to have to replace the whole machine, but would rather wait until after the house move if I can.

Participantandyjawa new brushes have now been installed and we have a working machine! I’ve put it through drum clean, synth, cotton (longer and shorter), so spin speeds of 400, 700 and 1000 (max on this machine). So far so good. I think I can hear a louder “buzzing” from the motor when on spin cycles, but this could be: –
a) brushes “bedding in” (if that is a thing”
b) me noticing the noise more, because I am actively listening for any signs of problems (more likely, perhaps)So that’s a working machine for just under £10 (inc. delivery) and no need to rush out and buy a new machine. Thanks again for your help.
August 26, 2020 at 8:11 pm #471300andyjawa
Participanta) Yes that will be the new brushes bedding in. Keep the initial loads fairly light because though the brushes obviously have the angle they do not have the curve ( due to running in ) which means the surface area of point of touch on the commutator is not a lot presently for the amperage the motor is going to draw – this is me just being a bit extra careful! b) quite possibily. The main thing is you do not a massive blue and green fireworks display from the motor when the motor is on full throttle ( on spin! ) it you get that the armature is nuked. Anyway doubt you`ll have problems now. It`s a pleasure. All the best.

Participantandyjawa Hmm, that’s a good point about sparking.. I honestly don’t know as it the location of the machine means I can’t observe the motor whilst it is running. I suppose I could take the machine out again and look for signs of damage on the commutator.
September 4, 2020 at 7:34 am #471302andyjawa
ParticipantSorry had a computer problem. No, just leave it alone. All brushes will spark a small amount even after running in. If however you have large bright green and blue firework display WITH loud sounding sparking noise then your armature / motor is nuked and no amount of magic wand waving would cure that.

Participantandyjawa No worries re delay in reply; I wasn’t, necessarily expecting one. Now I’m late reply; didn’t check updates for ages. I think/hope I’m good wrt to state of motor. Thanks again for replies and help (hopefully this thread might help someone else as well).
