Hi all. I bought a Daewoo ERF337 Fridge Freezer (frost free), from Comet 6 months ago. Up until last week we’ve had no problems with it other than badly fitting salad trays. Then suddenly on Thursday night the compressor started getting noisy and by Friday morning the freezer had completed defrosted and the fridge was up to room temperature. We noticed that the compressor does not turn off at all and runs all the time. The fan seems to be working but is pumping room temperature air instead of the usual ice cold air.

Do any of you think this could be the compressor, or could there be a more simple solution?

I telephoned Comet last Friday and they said then they couldn’t come out until this Friday. I then wrote a letter of complaint stating that we can’t wait for a week without a fridge freezer as we have 6 children (one of whom is just a baby and needs cold milk etc). Now they said they have someone coming out to us today. If a part needs to be ordered we’ll be looking at at least another couple of weeks before it’s fixed.

What we’re concerned about is if the engineer mis-diagnoses the problem, does a temporary fix, then we restock the thing and lose another £100 worth of food.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. I would like a replacement fridge freezer now as I fell like I’d never trust this one again – you read so many horror stories about these things having one problem after another after another. If it is the compressor, it seems odd that it would go wrong after just 6 months use. Any one else have problems with Daewoo appliances?

Not at all! Appliance breakdowns can happen at any time, fortunately in your case it is covered by the guarantee. Once it’s fixed you may consider taking out an extended warrantee to include food loss? 😉

The Comet engineer just came out and said it is the compressor and they will have to replace the entire unit as it’s not cost effective to repair it. Comet no longer stock that model.
