I had previoulsy posted on this forum for advice on a Smeg A42 Opera with a persistant problem on the front-left ( biggest ) burner.

Long story short – I have fitted new thermocouples several times ( I must be on my by 5th now ) and they usually sort the problem for a few minutes, maybe days or weeks, but the problem soon returns.

The problem is the flame either not igniting, or going out soon after ignition.

The thermocouples I have fitted are original itmes from Servast, and the first one was fitted professionally. After that I have gone the DIY route, but I’m confident that I am fitting them correctly.

Could the problem be with the ‘tap’ or control knob? I can’t see how it could be the burner itself?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

My only advice would be to get a gas safety engineer to look at it

    Hi

Try lighting the burner with the knob being removed and see if it stays lit then.. If it does then the problem will lie with the knob.

you mean the pull-off knob – the bit that you touch that slides onto the tap-shaft? I will give it a try, but am struggling to see how this part could affect the burner?

Thanks, and I will report back on how it goes…

nope – that doesn’t make any difference. Surely if it isn’t the thermocouple ( and it can’t be that because I have fitted umpteen new ones to no effect ) it must be the tap assembly? They are £50 a pop though, so I would like to be more sure before I fit one of those.

    Any thoughts?

It needs a gas tap the solenoid inside has failed ,needs to be done by a gas safe engineer

Thanks Lawrence – I will look into getting this done.

I eventually got round to fitting a new gas tap and was hopeful that this would solve the problem, but guess what – the burner still goes out a few seconds after igniting, or sometimes simply won’t ignite at all

So – it’s had a new thermocouple, new gas tap, it’s all nice and clean and looks correct – but won’t work!

Any thoughts gratefully received before I buy a whole new cooker and sell this as a repair project on Ebay…

Get a gas safe engineer who is competent with cookers to look at it, I could fix it as I know what I’m looking for, you dont so this is why it isnt working still, its also not legal to repair your own gas appliance unless competent.

I had an engineer originally and he fitted a thermocouple which only lasted a couple of weeks and the problem returned ( though strangely I had the same problem on an identical cooker in a BTL property, and the thermocouple fixed it ) . I’m happy to have it fixed professionally if basic items like a thermo, or gas-tap won’t do the job, but I am competent enough to fit such items. This situation has got me genuinely curious though – if there is a gas supply, a new tap, and new thermo – what else id there to cause such a problem??

Sorry you say you’re competent to work on gas appliances, have you got the relevant gas safety certificate, cN you do all the necessary tests afterwards with the proper equipment ? If not then you shouldn’t be going anywhere near it, also doing the same in a property I assume you rent out is a whole different can of worms

I have to say Noggin does have a point (sorry I don’t know the answer by the way as I don’t touch gas, oh hell no). But as an uneducated guess I would point the finger back to the thermocouple (I assume by the way a ‘thermocouple’ you refer to is what I term as a ‘Fail Safe Device’ (aka FSD)????)

If that “thermocouple” fitted in the one example you cited then perhaps the ones you are fitting are faulty or the wrong ones?

As far getting in a ‘Gas Safe’ engineer to sort it. You’ve already taken that route with limited or no success. You have proclaimed your ability to rectify the problem. It’s your problem after all. You now take the responsibility over a potential life or death situation as far as gas appliances go.

The advice here is to seek professional help. I respectfully suggest you heed that .

You could teach a monkey to fit most of these parts. The clever bit is knowing which bits to fit and why ( and it seems that’s the knowledge I am missing ) .

I am going to replace this cooker in November when Smeg bring out a new 70cm model ( the imaginatively titled C7GPX8 ) The space I have available means I must have a 70cm, and it turns-out that is a rare size these days ( unless you count the very expensive Ilve models ) . Replacing the cooker might seem a little OTT, but mine is getting tired – I fitted a new top grill element the other day, and because of the age of my oven ( only about 10 years ) the original part has been deleted by Smeg, and the replacement part is a slightly different size necessitating moving the brackets that hold it in place.

Thanks anyway, and keep your eyes peeled on Ebay for an easy-to-fix ‘spares or repairs’ Smeg range cooker.

Without the relevant qualifications or work experience you are NOT competent to work on gas appliances, I’m pretty sure you couldn’t tell us how to do a pressure/working pressure test or even know what the readings meant or what was permissable in certain situations, you say you had a gs engineer out, did he not give you any warranty on the repair ?

Re: Darnit – my Smeg hob is broken again!…

As wsts says, you’ve got a gas supply, what is it? What is your standing pressure? Working pressure?, did you fit the right thermocouple or universal ones? Simple question you sure you’ve fitted the thermocouple correctly? Or you been fitting it wrong several times? You might well have been fitting them wrong, you sure you haven’t over tightened the thermocouple damaging the connection with the coin or kinked it, is there an interupter in it? Have you measured the voltage of the thermocouple? ,You sure the burner is ok? Is the flame catching the thermocouple? You haven’t done anything daft like wash it in the dishwasher or anything silly, is your extractor to close, is it pulling / lifting the flame, what is the ventilation and the requirements for your kitchen and appliance, What pans you using? Is your burner blocked? Are your bundy tubes clear? I could literally go on all night, but my point is you don’t actually know what your on about and requires a gas safe engineer because you wouldn’t be here slating what you say is an easy repair when you don’t actually what know the cure is!
See it every day “it’s only a 5 minute job” yeah that you can’t do! So call in an expert and stop risking people’s lives on your limited knowledge, there is a very good reason gas safe was introduced and that is to stop people who don’t know what they are doing messing! Everything is easy when you know it,
