Data about kitchen appliances lifetime

Hello,

I am an economic student and planning to do my bachelor thesis. As my uncle owns a small kitchen appliance store, I was thinking about writing my thesis about the lifetime of kitchen appliances.

I think to everybody on this forum it is quite clear that kitchen appliances have been built to get broken sooner. However, I would like to proof this in a quantitative way.

Can you recommend me any historical data about the life expectancy of kitchen appliances? Are there any studies which you could suggest.

I think you will struggle to get any quantitative information let alone historical data. we know prices here in the UK are about 70{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cheaper than thirty years ago in terms of build and durability. You may be better placed to ask your uncle as the market conditions in Austria may be different to the UK 😉

The only real help I can give you is to point you in the direction of a lot of reading to be had from this link about appliances. Also there is this link for students looking for information.

Yep I haven`t found anything for Austria.(too smallish country :rotfl: )

I was thinking to use the product prices in his books.(which are all non-digital)

As of now, it seems to me it may be hard to prove that companies are producing products with lesser life expectancy…

If you have any other idea please let me know.

PS.: Seems to me that such information is secret within the industry. Any explanation for that?
