I’m a sole trader, not VAT registered, most invoices are simply hand written receipts, and I wonder if anyone knows of any really simple bookeeping software that does nothing more than keep a tally of income and the various categories of expenses. Most packages seem vastly over the top for what I need.

    Your ideas will oblige…

Hmmm, thanks Raw, but not really what I’m looking for. I don’t have problems getting paid (usually), it’s more keeping track of income versus expenses that I’m after.

    Any suggestions?

I use Do$h Cashbook by Mamut Software. This is the programme my accountants told me to use some 10 or so years ago. Simple to use and quite cheap in comparison to some out there. I simply send a cd backup of my accounts at year end and they work out all the rest. I’m pretty sure they do a trial version that you can have a play with.

My accountant gave me the pro version for free and its dead simple to use so I would think this is just as easy

    I’d agree.

For smaller businesses Quickbooks in whatever flavour.

    Larger, Sage.

I’ve used Personal Accountz for years and it’s easy to use cheap and lets you set up as you want it. Ther are a few different versions but so far I’ve just used then personal account one and Mr Accountant does the rest.

    Re: Dead Simple bookeeping software?

Many thanks for all your replies; I’ve ended up with ‘Home Bookeeping lite’ by Keepsoft which is (a)free and (b) does everything I need for now. If ever I need to print everything out I will have to update to the full version for a small fee. But this package (which I think is designed more for keeping track of personal finances) was quickly adapted to do everything I need and nothing I don’t need!

All this came about because Microsoft Money (which I’ve used for years) is way out of date and seems to have no way to tot up and categorise income at the end of the year. Expenses yes, but as far as income’s concerned it assumes you’re an American on a fixed salary.

    Richard.
