ParticipantHi All. I have a 7 year old Deawoo upright Fridge Freezer Multi flow Frost free. It has been faultless up till now but has recently developed a high pitched squeaky whine noise that lasts for 4 or 5 seconds, 3 or 4 or 5 times a day perhaps. There is also a slight leak that appears to be coming from the insulated pipe that comes from the rear of the unit and loops up and down a couple of times.
The pipe is very cold, i can even feel that through the insulation and it is the bottom of the insulation on the first loop after exiting the rear of the unit that is damp.
Can any of this be explained? Is it terminal?!
Thanks
Jon

KeymasterIs it the insulation that’s damp?
The noise is most probably ice formation hitting the fan or the fan itself failing I’d suspect but it is hard to take a guess at as I don’t know Daewoo that well.

Hi, yes it is the insulation that is damp, at the bottom of one of the big loops it takes. It comes out, goies down, up and then down again. This pipe is insulated with the grey foamy insulation and sits behind the main black grille / radiator.
The noise doesn’t sound like a mechanical nosie to me, its more of a ‘pressure release noise’ like something blowing off, a bit like when you resrict the air coming form the neck of a balloon, only a bit lower in pitch.
Thanks
Jon

KeymasterOkay.
Big myth…
Domestic refrigeration magically develops leaks after a few years. 😉
It’s untrue as a general rule as these are sealed systems. Normally if they develop a leak the first sign of trouble you’ll see is poor cooling or the odd iceball in a normal falling air fridge freezer and, there’s always a cause for a leak, usually physical damage. You do get other causes but, it’s rare.
What I think you’ve got is an insulation failure where the insulation has broken down and yes, it’s terminal I’m afraid. That being the case, the compressor will be working overtime to try to chill the insides and it will fail as it’s being overworked.
