Defrosted my Hotpoint 8596F fridge freezer and when I switched it back on ………… nothing, no lights, sounds or anything.
I used a hairdryer to speed up defrosting could I damaged something by doing so ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Have you checked the fuse?

Yes, sorry, I should of added that my first point of call was to check the fuse, which was ok.
After reading some of the excellent free info on this site I’ve been testing around various components, not really knowing what else to do and I found two small black boxes (?) that are fitted to the lower right of the evaporator. One has brown wires the other blue. The brown wired one is open circuit while the blue is around 25 meg. Have no idea what they are or there function but its the only thing my limited understanding tells me may be at fault.
This episode began with the fridge not getting cold while the freezer was fine. Utilising this forums search function I discovered that it may need a defrost and when I dismantled the freezer section I was honestly shocked at the volume of ice around the evaporator, surprised the thing was working at all. As this began late yesterday evening I used a hairdryer on the ice as with current temperatures I doubt if that amount of ice would defrost overnight.
Both these little black things where completely encased in ice so it is possible water got inside but I don’t know.
Got the Mrs breathing fire now and its friday so the pressures on me !

It is all too possible that you need this thermistor and this one although I can’t obviously guarantee it. What I can tell you is that they are very common points of failure.

Thanks for that but I have another question, if thats the problem why is it dead but not blown the fuse ? Is there an internal reset ?

Those thermistors throw up all sorts of errors. 😕

    There’s no reset I’m afraid.

Below where the yellow thermistor fits into the evaporator, there will probably be a brown thermal fuse… if you heated this with your hair dryer, while the F/F was still plugged in, it will fail and cause the problem you are reporting.

Every cloud has a silver lining.
Afraid that my Mrs will not be without a fridge until new part arrives and has already ordered a new fridge freezer that is arriving tomorrow.
I will still attempt to repair the old one because it will become my new bait freezer 😀
Thank you very much for your replies guys, I’m one of those who begrudges getting anyone in to fix anything and the stickies/search function on this site have helped me no end to sort out all sorts of problems for myself friends and family.
Thank you again and until the next time ……….
