ParticipantI’ve got a Smeg DWF 44 slimline dishwasher, and the detergent dispenser doesn’t open any longer. I’ve checked that it’s not obstructed, and it’s not gunked up by anything. Dave (of UKW) has confirmed that I can get a replacement part ( http://tinyurl.com/5zwnru ).
Question is, do any of you guys that think that a new dispenser will solve the problem? If so, can it be fitted by a Monkey (me)? I’ve got screwdrivers, and I’m not afraid to use them…
Thanks for your advice – I really can’t afford a new one, and the missus is going to make me do all the washing up at Christmas if I can’t get it sorted!

Door outer panel off, 6 screws to release the dispenser. A resistance test on the solenoid coil will tell you whether or not it’s functional.
Power off first.

Thanks Penguin45!
Any idea where I can find out what resistance I should be looking for? I’m assuming I can point my multimeter at it?
Thanks!

Usually a low kOhm reading is there or there about. Dead coil will give no reading.

Thanks Penguin45!! I’m off to get my screwdrivers out…

Assuming the Coil is the white thing in the dispenser unit that’s round, white, has two connections to it (brown/live? & pink/red wires?), that presumably when power is delivered to it, moves the metal metal cylinder to activate the detergent door (pause for breath), pointing my multimeter at the two connections on it (200ohm setting) gives no reading (infinite resistance?).
Busted coil then. I’m guessing you can’t get the coil separately?
Thanks again for all your help. I’ll get the new dispenser unit ordered…

Correct. Split the circuit just to be sure.

Them wer’t days…. No, sorry, complete assembly.

Looks like they’ve changed the unit slightly since mine – only the coil. fitted fine; slight confusion because the coil connections have been rotated. Is merrilly washing or rinsing dishes as I write this. Did the flap open? we’ll see…

Out of interest, about 1600ohm resistance across the (new) coil.

= 1.6 kOhms.
