As the title suggests, I am enquiring as to what you guys thing of various detergents, and other additives.

There are a lot of options on the market, and plenty of advertising, so I was trying to guage, if I may, proffesional opinions on the various offerings.

Starting with Dishwashers, I would say there are 3 options – Powder, Tablets and Liquid Filled “Tablets”. There are also things such as Salt and Rinse Aid (Which some of the Tablets claim to contain).

We currently use Finish All in 1, or Quantum (whichever is on offer) plus Rinse Aid (when I remember to fill (no light on front of dishwasher)) and Salt.

So what would you suggest? If you use an all in one tablet, do you still need Salt and Rinse Aid if the tablet “contains” them?

Moving on to washing machines, again there are several options – but also several applications.

We currently use liquids “in drum” as the drawer on our machine clogs at the slightest whiff of detergent.

We have no particular loyalty on detergents, we just buy what is on offer.

So what would you suggest here? (Let us assume that the drawer does not clog (as we are in the market for a new machine anyway).
As far as I can see there are several options. In drawer we have Liquid, Powder, and possibly tablets. In drum we have Liquid, Tablets and Liquid Filled Tablets.

Also, is there any real benefit to 2-in-1 detergents or adding softener? I have heard that towels, while feeling rougher, would be more absorbant if no softener was used. (I have already read thoughts on here regarding such things as Calgon, so I won’t even bother going there :))

Lastly do you have any recomended brand, or “own brand”. Or are they all much of a muchness.

Well i have done a bit of digging… and from what I have come across I think I will change to Fairy Active Bursts for the dishwasher. I was tempted by the powder but the missus is crap at doseages.

Re the washing machine, my choice is between Ariel Tabs and the new-ish Excel Gel.

I am liking the sound of the gel, but everything that is mentioned about the build-up associated with liquids is putting me off.

Which would you recommend? (ps it is going to be either Biological or with Febreze effect which I belie is also Bio).

No liquid or gel contains the bleach you need to kill off the bacteria and help keep the innards clean.

You should make sure that you do a regular maintenance wash if you intend to do everything at low ( sub 60° ) temperatures.
